Horn to lead Lions in Mbombela

The Lions will travel to Mbombela this weekend where they will face old foes, the New Nation Pumas in the first round of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious competition, the Carling Currie Cup.

Lions head coach, Ivan van Rooyen, has picked a side filled with experience and youth, which will be captained by Francke Horn, who has returned from injury.

Exciting youngsters like Morne Brandon, Banele Mthenjane, Ruhan Straeuli, Emmanuel Tshituka and Aidynn Cupido will all look to make their debuts from the bench.

“We look forward to an exciting Currie Cup season, where we will play matches with very short turn-around times. Our next match will already be on Wednesday, 23 June at Emirates Airline Park when we will host DHL Western Province,” Rudolf Straeuli, CEO of Lions Rugby Company commented.

The match kicks off at 19:00.

Lions: EW Viljoen; Jamba Ulengo, Manuel Rass, Dan Kriel, Rabz Maxwane; Fred Zeilinga, Dillon Smit; Francke Horn (capt) , Vincent Tshituka, Sibusiso Sangweni, Reinhard Nothnagel, Willem Alberts, Carlu Sadie, PJ Botha, Nathan McBeth. Ek dink isolasie agv die Covid gevalle is die rede vir die grootskaalse veranderinge.

Currie cup will run alongside the United Rugby Champ from September correct ? means we need a squad of 60 odd players.... or will curie cup be doen by the time that comp starts ?

Worried about Dayimani... once he has tasted the fruits of the cape i fear we wont be seeing him again.

Sadly his contract is up at the end of the currie cup so this "loan" isn't really a loan. It's him starting at WP/Stormers. Serious loss for the Lions, I don't think there is another player in SA right now with his size, speed and skill. Actually makes me so angry thinking about how our "talented" coach is throwing away the incredible group of juniors we had over the last 3 years.

He has it in him to be great, but it seems not to be working out at the Lions for him. Injuries at crucial times, playing with niggles, too much media hype, etc play havoc on young, promising players.

Ek voel ons gaan basics baie goed moet doen en amper ñ perfekte game moet speel om te wen. Goeie geleentheid vir baie spelers om hand op te steek, want die spelers wat uit is met covid gaan nie vinnig weer speel nie.

Ons was nog die hele jaar verroes as jy my vra.
Hoe sterk ons diepte is of groep is om CB te wen sal ons later weet.
Ek like baie van die nuwe manne, hopelik kan ons bietjie beserings vry gaan.
Bietjie tyd om meer as een game in n ry te wen.
