After the game against the pumas. Elton mentioned (twice). That we will celebrate this win.

Not much to celebrate, maybe the guys “skipped” New Years or something , either way . There is no time to celebrate if we have another big game in 4 days . I’m also of the view that we should choose our best side and make a statement by klapping the bulls .

We then have enough time to celebrate and prepare for a semi

Bulls pick extended squad for Lions game

The Vodacom Bulls will be missing some of their stars ahead of their midweek fixture against the Xerox Lions at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday thanks to Covid protocols.

Coach Jake White confirmed some players – such as winger Kurt-Lee Arendse and Stedman Gans – would be missing because they were being retested after initially testing positive, then negative and then positive again.

All of which means that the Bulls had to name an extended squad.

On the flip side, the squad includes returns for Lizo Gqoboka at prop, Elrigh Louw at flank and Jan Uys at lock, which can only strengthen the side up front.

The game was rescheduled after positive tests in the Bulls camp initially forced the postponement of the match, meaning the Bulls will play two games this week with their match against the Pumas shifted to Sunday.

“Some players test positive, then negative and then positive again. The reality is because of the uncertainty of whether there is a new strain we’re just retesting a few guys again,” White explained on Monday.

White admitted it has been challenging to plan for the games after a long break, but is happy his team can complete their fixtures.

“It’s unique. Its not often that you can play two or three games in 10 days, and one of those is a playoff game. There is a lot of thought that goes into it behind the scenes – should we go flat out? What do we do? What happens if we play the same players and they don’t last until next Saturday?

“What happens if I decide I’m going to put all my eggs in one basket and then the team changes anyway because three guys test positive. You could actually leave out some guys, and then test, and then have three guys who test positive that you thought could play and then you end up back at square one.

“It isn’t ideal but it is the same for everybody. At this point in time we are just happy that having not played for three weeks we are still top of the log.”

Kick-off is at 4pm CAT (SA, GMT+2) and will be televised live on the SuperSport Grandstand and Rugby channels.

Carling Currie Cup Preview - Vodacom Bulls v Xerox Lions

The rescheduled fifth round Carling Currie Cup Gauteng Derby between the Vodacom Bulls and Xerox Lions in Pretoria on Wednesday will set the tone for a high-octane final stretch as the pool stage concludes this week and the top teams battle it out for home semi-finals.

A victory for the Vodacom Bulls – the only team with two games remaining – will catapult them into a favourable position to wrap up the pool stage as the top team for a semi-final and possibly a final in Pretoria.

Should they win this match – which will be broadcast live on SuperSport at 16h00 – they may need only a bonus point from their clash against the Phakisa Pumas in Nelspruit on Sunday to guarantee them top spot on the log if DHL Western Province – who are also on 35 log points, but with an inferior points’ difference – defeat the Cell C Sharks on Saturday.

The Xerox Lions, who edged the Cell C Sharks into third place on the standings thanks to a favourable points’ difference despite being tied on 33 points with the Durbanites, meanwhile, will throw everything at the men from Pretoria in their final round-robin match in the hope of putting them in line for a home semi-final.

Their fate, however, is out of their hands, as they will have to rely on the Cell C Sharks to defeat DHL Western Province on Saturday with a fairly narrow points’ margin to possibly see those hopes materialise.

The match-ups between these sides have been balanced in the last few years, with each side winning four of their last eight Carling Currie Cup games.

Interestingly three of the Vodacom Bulls’ victories were in Pretoria, but with the team having last taken the field over three weeks ago, they will have to hit the ground running to work off the rust quickly against a side that is high on confidence after five successive wins.

Vodacom Bulls Director of Rugby, Jake White, named an extended squad of 28 players as they await a few COVID-19 test results, with Springbok prop Lizo Gqoboka back in the mix after not playing at all since the season resumed due to injury.

Also back from injury is Elrigh Louw (flank), while former SA Schools wing Stravino Jacobs and Blitzbok forward Tim Agaba (flanker) have also been included in the extended squad.

Experienced Springbok prop Jannie du Plessis, meanwhile, will run out for the Xerox Lions in one of three changes to coach Ivan van Rooyen’s starting team, replacing Wiehahn Herbst, while the other change in the forward pack is at flank, where Marnus Schoeman moves up from the replacements bench in place of Jaco Kriel.

In the backline, Burger Odendaal will add bulk to the midfield in place of Wandisile Simelane, who will make an impact off the bench.

Teams:

Vodacom Bulls (from) – Lizo Gqoboka, Schalk Erasmus, Trevor Nyakane, Jan Uys, Ruan Nortje, Marco van Staden, Elrigh Louw, Duane Vermeulen, Embrose Papier, Chris Smith, Stravino Jacobs, Cornal Hendricks, Marnus Potgieter, Jay-Cee Nel, David Kriel, Johan Grobbelaar, Jacques van Rooyen, Marcel van der Merwe, Walt Steenkamp, Arno Botha, Tim Agaba, Ivan van Zyl, Morne Steyn, Keagan Johannes, David Kellerman, Jade Stighling, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Joe van Zyl.

Xerox Lions – 15 Tiaan Swanepoel, 14 Stean Pienaar, 13 Burger Odendaal, 12 Dan Kriel, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Elton Jantjies (captain), 9 André Warner, 8 Len Massyn, 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 Marnus Schoeman, 5 Marvin Orie, 4 Willem Alberts, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Jaco Visagie, 1 Dylan Smith.

White forced to pick new-look Bulls team for Lions visit

Several players, including centres Cornal Hendricks and Stedman Gans, are not available for the clash following a latest round of Covid-19 testing.

Bulls coach Jake White has named a new-look side to take on the Lions in a postponed Currie Cup match at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday evening.

After naming an extended squad for the match on Monday, White named his matchday side on Tuesday evening minus centre stars Cornal Hendricks and Stedman Gans and wing Kurt-Lee Arendse.

Wings Travis Ismaiel and Marco Janse van Vuren, both of whom recently featured on the wings, have also missed out on selection.

The good news is Lizo Gqoboka is back in the front row after time out of the game, while Chris Smith, as he’s done on several occasions in the Currie Cup, will start ahead of Morne Steyn at flyhalf.

The Bulls have been hit hard by Covid-19 in recent weeks and several players are not available. White, too, was bed-ridden with the virus over the festive season.

The match was supposed to have been played on Boxing Day but was postponed because of the outbreak of Covid-19 in the Bulls camp.

Kickoff on Wednesday is 4pm.

Bulls: David Kriel, Jade Stighling, Marnus Potgieter, Jay-Cee Nel, Stravino Jacobs, Chris Smith, Embrose Papier, Duane Vermeulen (capt), Elrigh Louw, Marco van Staden, Ruan Nortje, Jan Uys, Trevor Nyakane, Schalk Erasmus, Lizo Gqoboka. Bench: Johan Grobbelaar, Jacques van Rooyen, Marcel van der Merwe, Janko Swanepoel, Ivan van Zyl, Morné Steyn, Arno Botha, Tim Agaba
