Think you touch on quite a few important points here. South African administrators have quite a few challenges that New Zealand administrators don't ( i.e. , a falling Rand that is bordering on banana currency status; political interference etc). But at the end of the day these are no excuses, they are in fact reasons for management to be pro active instead of re-active. Your point of having youngsters groomed alongside established veterans in a relatively stable environment instead of contracting rejects and injury prone old timers in their mid 30's on short notice to assist these youngsters is valid.

Planning is critical , but its a different issue. Attitude vs Ability is the issue here. I will always pick attitude first . If players both have a good attitude, only then I will look at ability and pick that guy. Sure , circumstances , pr lack of game time could create attitude issues, but that is were a player is tested and needs to past that character test . It happens to all of us in work as well, you are tested, but some fail and others stand up |

I 100% agree that effort outweighs talent. Ackermann and Swys proved that when they took "rejects" from the bulls and sharks and made us Super Rugby finalists.
My point with the youngsters I mentioned was more about planning and road-mapping. You see it in New Zealand all the time - talented youngster in year 1 is in the squad, learning the ropes with a few games off the bench, year 2 - he's on the bench and starting a few games, year 3 - he's rotating with the starter and year 4 he is the starter and a new youngster joins the system. That way the team is moving the "old" player on and plan correctly. Youngsters also understand where they are and feel like they are part of the plan.
In SA we seem to be desperate to hang on to guys to the point where we are still negotiating with guys for next season long after the current season ended. Last year for example - we all knew Mapoe was going (actually as much as I really like him - it looked like a season too many at times last season), but how many games did his replacement start? Did we even know who would be our outside center this season? We knew Marx would be on sabbatical yet how many games did Jansen start? |

My question further is do the guys who are currently in the team really deserve to just be dropped just to make a place for these talented youngsters? Do you now pick Mcbeth ahead of Dylan Smith and Sti Sithole, just because he is talented? What has Matthews done wrong to deserve to be dropped? When we were under pressure, he and Kriel stood their ground on defence. I agree talent should be developed, but remember the coach also has some performance targets he needs to meet, in order for him to retain his job. The talented youngsters will get a chance, as long as they keep working hard and maintain the right mindset.

Wandile, is that you? Anyhow, all of us would agree that Simelane and Dayimani are super talented players, and we would want to see them grow as players and make the number 13 and 7/8 jerseys theirs. Most of us have been watching rugby for a very long time, and we can spot what we think the shortcoming of players are, obviously if players can work on their shortcomings and overcome them, so much the better for the player AND the team. For a player to think he deserves a jersey, that's just not going to go down well with anyone, just keep on working and FORCE the coach to pick you, even if you think the coach is not interested in you. At the moment the players in the Lions side that are forcing the coach to pick them, are Marnus Schoeman, Vincent Tshituka, Len Massyn and Tyrone Green. If all 23 played with the effort of those 4, it would be spectacular. Anyway, it would never be in the interest of a coach to NOT pick a player that is forcing himself into the team, and by forcing himself into the team, I mean by showing the effort of the 4 players I mentioned

I saw a video of Rassie Erasmus explaining the cycle of a springbok, going from hardwork to entitlement.
I think it can happen to the best of players, you achieve something, then you become entitled. It just happens to different people at different stages. Thats why life coaches and mentors are critical

I find it very difficult to believe a player that has excelled at every level to be one of the best junior centers in the world suddenly loses all professionalism and doesn't know how to put in hard work. I think there is more to this and probably a case of he's lost motivation because the coach is not interested in him at all and would rather convert a wing into a center.
The same situation as Dayimani - his third season of senior rugby, has done extra work with the 7s team, done loads of work in the gym and we want to play a flank at 8, yes Massayn has done well but what does that say to Dayimani? It says time to find a new team.
Last year I was very excited for the lions future with McBeth, Brandon, Ntlabakanye, Van Wyk, Tshituka, Dayimani, Lombard, Rass, Simelane, Tambwe and Green. Already Tambwe has gone after not getting any chances despite scoring tries for fun and I expect Dayimani and Simelane to be gone next year with McBeth and Ntlabakanye following. |
