Steve Hansen has flagged up the thorny issue of inconsistent refereeing in the build-up to the All Blacks attempt to make history by winning three successive Rugby World Cups in Japan later this year.

Hansen has been perplexed by the lack of penalties against the South African Lions franchise in Super Rugby compared to the New Zealandteams and believes the scrum has become another area of serious concern again.

The All Blacks head coach said: “A lot of the penalties are right, but they’re not consistent on both sides. If that’s a penalty today then it’s a penalty for the whole day not just part of the day. The Lions team in South Africa had been awarded 48 penalties in three games while the opposition sides had only been awarded six. That would mean there wasn’t a lot of consistency being applied.

“I don’t know any team that’s only given six penalties away in three games so I would say there’s not enough consistency in what they’re seeing. I’m not saying the penalties they are giving are not right, I’m saying they’re obviously missing a few.

“It’s interesting, sometimes some sides don’t want to engage, they’re scrummaging for penalties and it’s very tough for the referee to actually see who is not engaging and who is pushing over the mark.

“From the naked eye, it is easier to see that I’ve pushed over the mark rather than you not engaging so we’ve got to help them in that area. We’ve had a chat to them about looking at the No.8 and if he is not pushing his team in then they’re not engaging. Most referees have got to use their ARs [assistant referees] to have a look at the whole picture rather than just the front picture.”

The All Blacks’ North Island players have gathered in the Ardmore Marist Rugby Club in south Auckland today, and Hansen added: “Getting through the next few weeks and getting the right team selected and then getting really excited about that challenge of going there and trying to re-capture a trophy that we no longer have.

“We’re going to try to do something that no one else has done before and win three in a row. The primary goal now is to get the right team selected… and get ourselves prepared for a Rugby Championship.

“We don’t own it [World Cup]. It’s not in the cabinet – it’s gone back to World Rugby, so you can’t defend something you don’t own. We have to be hungry to try to get it back and re-capture it.”

Ek verstaan nie waarom mense wil he die penalty count moet 50-50 wees nie?? As een span duidelik meer foute maak en swakker dissipline het, waarom kan die strafskop telling nie meer wees vir daai span nie? Waaroor hulle nou moan gaan juis veroorsaak dat skeidsregters spanne verkeerdelik blaas net om die strafskop telling gelykop te kry. Scrums bv raai hulle al klaar en is dit baie keer een strafskop vir jou, een strafskop vir my.

Almal kyk so vas in die min strafskoppe wat ons afgestaan het, maar het iemand (soos die hoof van die skeidsregters) al die moeite gedoen om te gaan kyk na al die skrums en al die strafskoppe wat die Leeus gekry het? Mens kan mos nie sommer net sê: " Dit lyk nie reg nie so daar MOET fout wees!!". Gaan bestudeer die wedstryde en gee 'n offisiële verslag. Rasta het geweet na die Waratahs wedstryd (Seconds) gaan hy onder die vergrootglas wees en steeds kon hy net drie strafskoppe teen ons vind. Hoekom sal hy sy loopbaan wil skade aanrig? Aan die einde vd dag sal die span wat balbesit en veldposisie oorheers minder strafskoppe afstaan en net dalk pas die Leeus die beste by die reëls aan.

Stem saam, wys vir ons goed uit waar die Leeus nie gestraf was nie? Mens kan duidelik sien ons wil nie strafskoppe afstaan nie. Die NZ spanne kom altyd weg met nonsens by die rucks, noudat hul gestraf word is daar eweskielik groot fout.

NZ is beter as die ander spanne t.o.v. skills en kroek. Ander internasionale spanne is net so sterk en net so vinnig.

NZ is meesters om sielkundig op skeidsregters te werk en om hulle kroekery weg te steek. Nou gaan skeidsregters in SA weer alles in hulle vermoe doen om NZ en SA soortgelyke strafskoppe toe te ken. Hansen doen hierdie al klaar vir die komende Wereld Beker in gedagte!

Hy moet eintlik bly wees ons het nie al ons moontlike strafskoppe pale toe gevat nie - dan was die tellings heelwat anders. Saterdag se wedstryd teen die Highlanders het hulle op 'n kol - ek dink die 70ste min - 135 tackles gemaak teenoor die Leeus se 65. Dit wys 'n mens dat hulle baie meer moes verdedig. Dis waar baie strafskoppe afgestaan word. Vergeet van die onkantlyn wat die Skeids en Lynregters miskyk. Dis NZ se spanne is pro's daarin. Hy moet eerder elke wedstryd in sy geheel gaan analiseer en dan sy stellings maak. D

Ja, ek stem saam. Ons het hulle regtig op n stadium onder groot druk gehad.

I am not at all surprised at the contrasting penalty counts:

- We've improved our discipline and we aren't giving away silly penalties. 
- Our scrum is our weapon and we target scrums to earn penalties.
- We scored MANY tries from mauls last year, teams now this and this year they attempt to sack us early. We still kick to the corner , so obviously the penalties stack up.

The thing WE should be complaining about is the reluctance of the Ref to give a yellow cards to our opponents and award penalty tries to us. we should be up in arms not them!!!

Agree 100%. He should be thanking the refs for not awarding penalty tries and not sending players to the bin.
