There was a point towards the end of last season's "Currie Cup" when I thought maybe I had been unfair on the coaching team and they were finding their feet at this level, and that management deserved credit for still with them and sticking to the promote from within policy. But....no, they are out of their depth. Being soundly beaten by the Bulls B team says it all. For all the talk of being true to the Lion's DNA, I don't see a team that relentlessly attacks - at best I see individuals running away from support and players on completely different wavelengths.
Despite this coaching team being in place for close to 2 years they still have no game plan or pattern of play - at least as far as I can see. I could buy into their "plan" if I could see: a clear game plan and structure, or an emphasis on developing talented youngsters and building a team around them. In stead we get players seemingly making it up as they go, frustrated young players and the over contracting of players in positions we really don't need more players in - can someone explain the purpose was of signing Mienie, Herbst and Dreyer or Ulengo, Rossouw, Matthews, Viljoen and Maxwane? Tambwe must be thanking his agent - he could still be at the Lions not getting a look in and watching this rubbish from the stands but instead he's playing or a well run team full of elite players and win trophies...and could well become a Springbok if he keeps playing and the Bulls keep winning. I worry other youngers will follow him to the Bulls or Sharks or even WP. Management need to take a serious look in the mirror and decide if they are still up for it. Altmann Allers, Neville Jardine and Rudolf Straueli have done unbelievable work over the last decade but it might be time for a refresh. Appointing an entirely rookie senior coaching team, poor/over contracting and not keeping pace with the tend setters in SA Rugby (big money external investment at the Bulls and Sharks and the signing of national interest players) is catching up. I think they need to bring in corporate and sporting consultants and do a top to bottom review from chairman down to junior kit men. Then implement the recommendations - even if that means guys who have contributed a lot over the years stepping aside. This is not a "rebuilding phase" it is a spiral. We need another revolution like we had in 2013. |

Cash and Whiteley are in the same position as Eugene Eloff was a decade ago. Unable to hang on to quality players( Jacques Fourie, Habana), and the top brass stocking up the team with either injury prone seniors close to retirement, or mediocre journeymen such as Warner, Wiehan Herbst, Dan Kriel and Fred Zeilnga.
No coaching team, however competent, can build a team with the same vision and philosophy when players come and leave at the rate that has been happening the last couple of years. We are probably in a worse situation than a decade ago. Then our junior structures were still able to feed the union with talented youngsters. Our varsity and schools rugby have lately been neglected and the results speak for themselves.

Ons jong pak was goed genoeg. Is Dillon Smit weer beseer? Want hy moet tans by verre ons beste 9 wees.

I hear you to a degree but surely a coaches job is to make a team better than the sum of its parts? We were in a better position when Cash took over than when Eloff took over. At least Eloff's (and Muir's) teams were exciting to watch - yes we'd also lose, but we'd score some great tries. Now we have some of the best juniors in SA and our junior teams have been doing well in recent years. Last year our under 21s played some exciting rugby and finished second. We have young players like: Lombard, V. Tshituka, Swanepoel, Sadie, Simelane, Dayimani, McBeth, Ntlabakanye, Brandon, Horn, Mollentze, Rass, Van Wyk, Snyman, Gordon, E. Tshituka and Sangweni. There is serious talent here. But we need to stop signing props and wingers that never play and just block young talent while using a big portion of the salary budget. Cut the deadwood, bring back Marx (with SARUs help) and sign a top enforcer lock, back the youngsters and give them a good, clear game plan.

Agree with most of your comments. Amongst the backs however, the cupboard is bare. At halfback, other than Krappies v/d Berg, we have nothing. On the past 18 months performance, not a single flyhalf has shown the potential to be a long term replacement for Elton. Things look better in the midfield, where Simelane shows great flair on attack, while Mollentza, Luke Roussouw and Henco show promise. And since our Curry Cup final appearance two seasons back, with exception of Stean Pienaar, we have not seen any young outside back putting his hand up.
