Edinburgh v Emirates Lions

Match-up Insight

  • Edinburgh have lost their last six URC matches against South African franchises but have the fourth-highest pre-season probability of playoff qualification.

Edinburgh

  • Take points on offer: last season, Edinburgh’s goalkicking success rate was the second-poorest in the league (61.6%). However, in Round 1 they were 100% off the tee and claimed 15 points from penalty goals.
  • Challenge defenders one-on-one: the Emirates Lions’ tackle success rate last weekend was the poorest of the round (62.9%).

Emirates Lions

  • Reduce error count: last weekend, the Lions conceded 14 turnovers – as many as any other team – all but one of which were unforced.
  • Be clinical at the lineout: when the Lions won last season, they won 90.7% of their lineouts as opposed to 76.2% when they lost.

Speedster Edwill van der Merwe returns to the Emirates Lions starting XV as they take on Scottish outfit Edinburgh for Round 2 of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship. The Emirates Lions Player of the Year missed out on selection last week due to injury, but slots right back into his familiar left-wing position after being cleared to play.

Last weekend’s try-scorers from the replacements bench Ruan Venter and Henco van Wyk crack the nod in the starting XV after an immense effort in the latter stages of the game hosted at Emirates Airline Park.

Speaking ahead of Saturday, Emirates lions Head Coach Ivan van Rooyen believes he has the right balance of players on this tour who have the ability to vary his side’s play in conditions a far cry from sunny South Africa.

“I’m really excited about the group we have going into this 4-week tour. I feel we’ve gone with a dynamic mix of players who can go physical and where needs be, have the option to select players to speed the game up.

“We are expecting strong line-ups from all four teams we will be facing with a couple of their internationals reporting back for club duty. Pitch conditions are something we are also familiar with in that there will be a combination of grass and artificial surfaces over the next four weeks.”

“We’ve learnt a lot from this past weekend. We played with good intensity and when we were physically dominant in certain parts of the game, we had the makings of a championship team. Unfortunately, there were moments where we were inconsistent and that for us is a big work on ahead of Saturday and the rest of the tour,” he concluded.

Edinburgh Rugby welcome the return of six internationalists to its matchday squad for tomorrow evening’s BKT United Rugby Championship home opener against Emirates Lions at Hive Stadium (Saturday 28 October, kick-off 5pm) – live on Viaplay.

Blair Kinghorn (full-back), Grant Gilchrist (lock), Hamish Watson (openside flanker), Viliame Mata (number 8), Ewan Ashman (replacement hooker) and WP Nel (replacement tighthead prop) are all named in the capital side’s 23 for the Round 2 clash.

Sean Everitt’s side are looking to make it two-from-two after last weekend’s opening round victory away to Dragons RFC, with the capital side returning to competitive action at Hive Stadium for the first time since April.

On his team selection, Senior Coach Sean Everitt said: “We’re delighted to welcome back a number of internationalists to our matchday squad, they add further strength and experience as we take on a hugely competitive Emirates Lions side.

“We’re really excited to get back to Hive Stadium after opening the Championship on the road and it will be brilliant to be back in front of the Edinburgh supporters – they really do provide us with an energy and a spark.

“Although we weren’t altogether pleased with last weekend’s performance, we showed plenty of physicality and resilience to come away with a hard-fought win away from home.

“We’ll need to repeat those levels of physicality tomorrow night if we’re to come out on top – it’s set to be a massive night of rugby at Hive Stadium.”

Full-back Kinghorn returns to the back-three after Scotland’s Rugby World Cup campaign, with Wes Goosen and GB Sevens flyer Ross McCann – a debutant in last weekend’s win in Newport – named on opposite wings.

Centres Matt Currie and Mark Bennett continue in midfield as stand-off Ben Healy – named BKT Player of the Match on his first outing for the club – makes his first home start alongside co-captain and scrum-half Ben Vellacott.

An unchanged front-row sees hooker Dave Cherry pack down alongside props Boan Venter and Javan Sebastian, as Glen Young and newly appointed co-captain Gilchrist complete the tight-five.

An all-international back-row sees Mata link-up with Scotland flankers Luke Crosbie and Watson.

Replacement Ashman will make his Edinburgh Rugby competitive debut if called upon from the bench, having featured for the club in a pre-season friendly against London Scottish while on loan from Sale Sharks in 2019.

Dom stupid foute. Boeboes  is 4 keer betrokke by spel en jaag al 4 kere kak aan. Hy moet asb retire.
Weereens lyk ons planloos op die aanval en Henco sal baie vinnig moet leer pass.
