Stick names 14 Boks in South Africa ‘A’ team to face Munster

South Africa ‘A’ coach Mzwandile Stick has included 14 capped Springbok players in his match-day squad to face Munster at Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork on Thursday (kick-off 21h30 SA time), in their first of two mid-week games on the year-end tour, ensuring that he struck a good balance of experience and youth in his team.

The Springbok assistant coach took two players from the Springbok squad that trained in Dublin last week for their opening Castle Lager Outgoing Tour Test against Ireland, prop Thomas du Toit and lock Jason Jenkins, while the Du Preez twins – Dan (loose forward) and Jean-Luc (utility forward) – were called up to the squad on Sunday.

SA Rugby director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus, who was originally expected to join Stick and his coaching team in Cork, meanwhile, joined the Springbok team in France, although he will continue to assist the SA ‘A’ coaches remotely.

Aphelele Fassi (fullback), Cornal Hendriks (centre), Johan Goosen (flyhalf) and Herschel Jantjies (scrumhalf) are the capped Boks in the backline, while Jean-Luc du Preez (No 8), Elrigh Louw (flank), Ruan Nortje, Jason Jenkins (both locks) and the entire front row of Du Toit, Ntuthuko Mchunu (both props) and Joseph Dweba (hooker) will all bring their Test match experience to a strong and physical pack of forwards.

Du Toit will captain the team, with Hendricks serving as his deputy.

There are a further three Springboks on the replacements bench in Dan du Preez, Sikhumbuzo Notshe (loose forward) and Grant Williams (scrumhalf).

The backline will be boosted by exciting DHL Stormers wings Leolin Zas and Suleiman Hartzenberg in a talented back three with Fassi, while former Junior Springbok captain and up-and-coming Cell C Sharks loose forward Phepsi Buthelezi will start in a strong loose trio with Louw and Jean-Luc du Preez.

Stick’s bench also features exciting young players in Andre-Hugo Venter (hooker), Simphiwe Matanzima and Sazi Sandi (both props) among the forwards, with former Junior Springboks Sanele Nohamba and Gianni Lombard (both utility backs) as backline cover.

“We are pleased with the quality of the squad we selected, and we are confident that with this thrilling blend of experienced and young players have what it takes to perform against Munster,” said Stick.

“One of the main reasons for selecting SA ‘A’ and Springbok teams for the year-end tour was to cast our net as wide as possible to test our player depth less than a year out from the Rugby World Cup, while also giving as many players as possible top-class game time.

“Most of these players have either been in the Springbok squad in the last two seasons, or they have been on our radar, so this is an ideal opportunity to see them in action against what will be a physical and challenging encounter.”

Stick said the team has been working hard to get their structures in place after assembling in Cork on Sunday, and that every minute on the training field will count in ensuring that they deliver a classy showing.

“The SA ‘A’ coaches had the luxury of spending the week with the Springboks last week, where they attended all the coaches’ meetings and training sessions to give them a taste of Test rugby and what they will expect this week, and this allowed us to hit the ground running,” said Stick.

“The coaches, players and team management know what is expected of them and we are working hard to implement our structures as effectively and efficiently as possible, and I have no doubt we will be a tight unit by the time we take the field.”

Of the challenge posed by Munster, Stick said: “They are one of the top club teams and they balance their physicality with exciting backline play, so we are going to be tested thoroughly.

“That said, we have named an equally exciting team and we have a number of leaders in core positions. Every one of our players will also want to make the most of this opportunity to throw their names in the hat for World Cup selection, which will serve as an extra motivational factor to showcase their talent.”

South Africa ‘A’ told to “knock down the Bok door”

Tempting as it may be, playing as individuals against Munster will not serve South Africa ‘A’ and they know a proper team effort will go much further in impressing the national selectors with an eye of breaking into the Springbok squad.

That was the unequivocal message from SA ‘A’ assistant coach Bafana Nhleko and team captain Thomas du Toit on the eve of their match against the Irish province at the new and sold out Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork on Thursday (kick-off 21h30 SA time).

Du Toit – one of 14 capped Springboks in the side – had a short stint with Munster six years ago and knows all about the passion and tradition of the side, and he warned his team-mates that cohesion will be paramount against a host team that also feature a number of internationals.

“This is a great opportunity for everyone in the team, to throw our names in the hat to play for the Springboks,” said Du Toit.

“Some of us have been there before and it’s everyone’s dream to be in the Bok squad, but we will have to find a balance between showcasing our talents and playing as a team. If we can win the match, everyone will look better, and we fully understand it.

“Munster won’t roll over, they have a great team and we’re expecting a wonderful game. We’re not going to be naïve, we know what this means to them and I’m sure Ireland’s victory over the Boks will give them some advantage, but this is a new game between new teams and all of us as very excited about this opportunity.”

Nhleko, who is also the Junior Springbok head coach, echoed these sentiments: “These guys understand that these games provide an opportunity for them to show the national coaches what they can do, and the message is that they must try and knock the Bok door down and make it difficult for the selectors to ignore them.

“But we need to work together if we want to be successful, and the players’ attitudes have been great – both the first-timers and the more experienced players. They have gone above and beyond this week to prepare for the game.

“We’re playing against a side with seven internationals and a few players who featured for Emerging Ireland recently and we will show them respect, but our first priority is to get the result, without complicating things for ourselves and get synergy in how we want to play.”

With adverse conditions predicted for Cork on Thursday night, with wind and rain expected, Du Toit said they will be ready.

“We trained in similar conditions this week, perhaps not quite as windy, but it’s the same for both teams and we are raring to go, and it will be up to both sides to roll with the punches best tomorrow night,” said Du Toit.

Nhleko added: “It will be important for us to keep our game plan simple as we only had two days to prepare, but the players know they can take their opportunities when presented – without going away from our strong set piece and kicking games, and strong defence.

“We know we’ll make mistakes, but we will try and the players will look for opportunities in the game. We know they are strong at the breakdowns, but our defensive system is good and that will help us in forcing turn-overs, not necessarily at the breakdown.

“Players such as Jean-Luc (du Preez) and Phepsi (Buthelezi) can be good on the ground, so too Thomas (du Toit), Joseph Dweba and Henco van Wyk.”

Nhleko also said he and his fellow SA ‘A’ assistant coaches, Joey Mongalo and Wian du Preez, enjoyed working with head coach Mzwandile Stick and the Springbok management in Dublin last week.

“Mzwandile has been phenomenal in leading us this week and it’s been a great privilege working with the Springbok coaches, to align with them and get good synergy,” said Nhleko.

“We were like kids in a candy store, but we took in a lot of information last week and it’s something we can definitely take forward with us, but working with this bunch of players is also very exciting.”

Munster make history to floor disjointed South Africa A

Irish province Munster made history on Thursday night when they beat a South African touring side for the first time.

Munster thoroughly deserved their 28-14 win against a disjointed South Africa A outfit.

The game was played in front of a sell-out crowd of 41 400 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork.

It was the largest ever attendance for a rugby match in Munster as the province played their first-ever game at the famous Cork venue.

Munster thoroughly deserved their win, having put SA A to the sword with some slick backline moves and an impressive high-tempo game despite the driving Cork rain.

The hosts ran in four tries via Shane Daly, Simon Zebo, Diarmuid Barron and Mike Haley, with Ben Healy converting all four tries.

SA A's tries came from Aphelele Fassi and Sikhumbuzo Notshe, with Johan Goosen and Gianni Lombard adding the conversions.

SA A had some ascendancy at scrum time, but that was about the only area of the game in which they impressed.

Munster exposed the tourists' leaky defence out wide and there was no real structure to the South African game.

The South Africans have to markedly improve if they are to notch a win against English side Bristol Bears next week.

It was the first time in the professional era that Munster had faced South Africa, with the previous encounters taking place in 1951 (Thomond Park), 1960 (Musgrave Park) and 1970 (Thomond Park).

South Africa won 11-6 in 1951 - a tour of Ireland, Britain and France on which they would win 30 of 31 matches. In 1960, the Boks beat Munster 9-3 and they thumped Munster 25-9 in 1970.

Munster's triumph adds to their proud history of also beating the All Blacks and Wallabies in the past.

Not 1 player stood up and said "I'm ready to play for the "A" team", just the opposite in fact. A guy like Jantjies made me wonder how he was selected for this tour, he was terrible.

Stick disappointed with SA ‘A’ result but proud of the players’ fight

South Africa ‘A’ coach Mzwandile Stick and captain Thomas du Toit were bitterly disappointed after the team’s defeat against Munster at Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork on Thursday night, in the first of their two mid-week matches on the year-end tour.

Munster outscored the SA ‘A’ team 28-14 with four tries to two, although had a few opportunities stuck for the visitors, the result could have been different.

Speaking after the match, Stick gave credit to Munster for their performance on a wet and windy night in Ireland.

“They played the conditions well and they used it to their advantage,” said Stick.

“We knew if we gave them soft entries into the 22, they would use it and there were chances that didn’t go our way. But I am proud of the boys for fighting until the end.

“In summary, we had a game plan that we didn’t execute well in the first half, and we also gave them soft penalties, and it cost us.”

Stick added if Suleiman Hartzenberg’s try was in and a few other chances went their way, it could have been a very different result: “But I’m sure the youngsters will learn from this.”

It was not all doom and gloom for Stick, as he praised the spark his bench injected: “Credit to those guys, the bench brought massive energy. We may not have been on the right side of the scoreboard, but these young players showed their warrior mindset. We played in front a of passionate sold-out crowd, and that is also something the players will learn from.”

Du Toit said one of the contributing factors to the defeat was the fact that they only had a few days to train and gel against a well-rounded and settled Munster team.

“We are not making excuses – the team had minimal time together to put our structures in place and build cohesion and we also played in very different weather conditions,” said Du Toit.

“Munster know each other very well, and they have been playing together for years, whereas we are a completely new team.”

With another fixture lined up next week Thursday against the Bristol Bears, Stick said they would go back to the drawing board and work on the necessary improvements in an attempt to deliver a winning performance.
