Cape Town 10s promises to be a ball

One of Cape Town’s biggest social sporting and lifestyle events - the Cape Town 10s - is taking place this weekend and promises to be an exciting and fun-filled two days.
The City of Cape Town’s Special Events Committee signed a new three-year agreement with the event organisers, which means that the Cape Town 10s is set to continue until the 2020/21 financial year.
The City supports the event in the form of City services as well as providing City-owned venues for use by the participating teams.
Now in its 11th year, the Cape Town 10s has grown from being a rugby-only tournament to a multi-sport event which also includes netball, dodgeball, beach volleyball, hockey and football. 
This year, the event will add a unique fun run element to the event which will see runners run through another of the city’s amazing venues, the Cape Town Stadium.
The City’s support for the event comes on condition that partners feature developmental aspects for residents.
To fulfil this condition, the Cape Town 10s has over the years partnered with various non-profit organisations including the JAG Foundation, The Atlas Foundation, Coolplay Project and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, SARLA and the Players Fund to promote development through sport. This year, the CT 10s will be hosting a coaching clinic for 80 young rugby players from Coolplay Project. 
Leading up to the main event this weekend, former Springbok player Bryan Habana and other former Springbok legends presented motivational talks to pupils at Vista High School in Bo-Kaap about the importance of discipline in team sports and in life.
Three current Springbok and Stormers legends will also join in the fun at the Cape Town 10s this year. Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth and Scarra Ntubeni will each be coaching their own teams, namely Abantwana Bomgquba, Etzebeth Express and the Ubumbo Legends from their respective home towns.
In addition, the Cape Town 10s will also be supporting two rugby teams from Masiphumelele and Langa with entries into the tournament as well as coaching.
It is really inspiring that these players are able to give of their time to share and impart their knowledge to these young rugby players. This embodies the Cape Town spirit of giving back to the community.    
In 2019, the event is expecting to host 90 rugby teams, 96 netball teams, 60 beach volleyball teams, 30 dodgeball teams, 14 football teams, 14 hockey teams and 90 CrossFit teams from all over South Africa and abroad.
The City is proud to provide support to an event which also puts emphasis on the development of residents, especially the youth.
We know the Cape Town 10s is not just about the action on the sporting field, but also has social components and, as the City, we would like to encourage spectators to have fun, but to do so responsibly.
Drinking and driving is highly discouraged as our law enforcement officers will not hesitate to take action against those who get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated.  
The Cape Town 10s takes place at the Hamilton Rugby Club in Green Point Town from Friday, February 1 until Saturday, February 2, 2019.
