Lions vs Blue Bulls
Blue Bulls looking for valuable away win
The match started evenly with both teams staying between the two 22 meter lines in the first 15 minutes.
The Lions got their first scoring opportunity 17 minutes into the game on a rare visit into the opponents 22 where the Blue Bulls went offside, and
Herkie Kruger made no mistake with the penalty, putting the Lions in a 3-0 lead.
The first try of the match came in the 38th minute, the Lions were deep inside the Blue Bulls 22 and were awarded a penalty when Jano Vermaak was pulled
into a ruck, instead of kicking for poles Vermaak took a quick tap and passed the ball far to the right to Herkie Kruger, who in turned passed to Grobbelaar,
who tapped on to Hollenbach, who received the ball on the Blue Bulls 22 meter line, he sold a huge dummy to the defenders, who bought it and he went inside
and dived over for the try without a hand laid on him. Kruger converted to make it 10-0, also the score at the break.
The Lions then scored an unlikely try three minutes into the second half, Franco van der Merwe broke round a maul close to the Blue Bulls 22 meter line,
and when he got close to the touchline, kicked the ball infield, where amazingly there was just a big open space, Jano Vermaak chased after the kick and
was quick enough to get to it first, he gathered and ran in the try. Kruger converted to make it 17-0.
The Blue Bulls had to wait until 17 minutes into the second half for their first points, which came from a Burton Francis penalty when the Lions
went offside in their own 22.
4 minutes from time the Lions seemed to seal the match when Herkie Kruger kicked his second penalty of the match after the Blue Bulls played the ball on the ground, the
score now 20-3.
The Blue Bulls then scored a try by Jaco Pretorius, which Burton Francis converted drop goal style to make it 20-10, and then just about a minute later
Burton Francis kicked a penalty after the hooter to make it 20-13 and the Blue Bulls getting a point from the match, but the Lions victorious and getting
the 4 points for the victory.
