Lions 31 (17) vs Reds 20 (10)
Lions beat Reds
Reds crazy game-plan backfires
The Lions recorded a rare win on Saturday when
they beat the Reds 31-20 in Brisbane.
Unfortunately Loosehead Prop Heinke van der Merwe was
injured in the match, and might be out for between three
and six months, a heavy blow for the Lions.
The Reds played everything wide from the start of the game,
probably hoping to put the Lions under pressure with a quick try or two, but
this game-plan backfired as the Lions defended well and then managed to score
the opening try, a brilliant long-range try started by Earl Rose in the Lions 22
meter area.
The rest of the match was pretty even, but the Lions scored three more tries
where the bounce of the ball favoured them, instead of the Reds, and this made
the victory possible, even though the Lions had to play with 13 men for a period
in the second half when Van Zyl and Kruger received Yellow cards from the
referee.
