XABA TO LEAD DHL WP IN CARLING CURRIE CUP OPENERFlank Nama Xaba will captain DHL Western Province in their opening Carling Currie Cup match against Sigma Lions a DHL Stadium on Saturday. The former DHL Western Province U19 and U21 captain will lead the senior team out for the first time in a match that kicks off at 17h00 on Saturday. It will also be the first DHL Western Province match with a crowd since 2019, with 2000 fully vaccinated spectators allowed to attend according to government COVID-19 protocols. Tickets are available now from the Ticketpro website. Xaba is joined in the loose trio by No.8 Hacjivah Dayimani and the promising Simon Miller, while Adre Smith and Connor Evans both make their DHL Western Province debut in the second row. Up front experienced hooker Chad Solomon has props Kwenzo Blose and Lee-Marvin Mazibuko on either side of him. In the backline, scrumhalf Thomas Bursey and wing Paschal Ekeji are also both on debut. Bursey will link up with experienced flyhalf Tim Swiel, who has Cornel Smit and Leolin Zas next to him in the midfield. Ekeji is joined in the back three by fullback Tristan Leyds and Angelo Davids. Hooker Jacques van Zyl, loose forward Keke Morabe and outside back Mnombo Zwelendaba are all set to make their DHL Western Province debuts from a replacements bench which also features a fair amount of experience in the likes of Deon Fourie and Godlen Masimla. DHL Western Province Head Coach Jerome Paarwater said that his team is determined to start their campaign with an energetic performance at home. “We have had good preparations leading up to this game, working closely with the DHL Stormers squad, so we are looking forward to the challenge and to playing in front of a crowd again. “We have a nice balance of youth and experience in the team, with four players in starting team making their debut and a few more on the bench, so it will be good to see what these combinations can do,” he said. The talented prop forward leads an exciting team which boasts ten Junior Boks in the match 23. Reacting to being handed the captain's armband, Ntlabakanye said Saturday will be a huge occasion for him. “It’s a massive honour and privilege for me to be called upon to lead this group”. "To be captain at a franchise that I've played for since I was U16 is huge thing for me. | Die onder 20 finaal waarin meeste van hierdie spelers gespeel het was vir my 'n groot getjommel, so hopelik het hulle intussen geleer om beter as 'n span saam te speel |

Ek dink ons het teen onsself verloor vandag. Die span het baie potensiaal. Die verskil was letterlik die 2 afskoppe wat ons nie kon beheer nie, waarvan hulle gaan druk het. 3 goed waaraan sal moet gewerk word: Dissipline Verdediging Afskoppe

Jislaik ek kan myself netnie kry om belang te stel in hierdie CC nie. Dit is soos 'n afgewaterde 3de span / onder 20 toernooi. In Januarie, middel van somer. En dan die URC ook, nes mens aan die gang kom is daar 'n helse breek tussen wedstryde en verloor mens weer die bietjie belangstelling wat opgebou het. Ek verlang na die dae van super rugby, toe ons teen die beste club spanne in die wereld gespeel het. Die konferensie formaat het nooit lekker sin gemaak nie, maar ten minste het die toernooi 'n begin en 'n einde gehad. Daarna weet mens die internasionale rugby en CC.

Laas jaar in die Curriebeker het ons altwee wedstryde teen die Pumas verloor, en met ons beste squad gespeel. Hierdie jaar speel ons met die onder 20's...wat dink jy?
