Fresh after a bye week the Emirates Lions head into their Pro14 Rainbow Cup SA match against the Cell C Sharks at Emirates Airline Park on Saturday, 5 June.

In keeping with the theme of consistency, coach Ivan van Rooyen opted for the same match 23 bar Manuel Rass, who is replaced by Dan Kriel.

Going into their third home game in this competition the Lions will take inspiration from their last performance on home soil. A look at the stats from the tournament highlight two Lions players who have had sterling performances. EW Viljoen is second on the list with his 43 carries, just one behind the 44 of Damian Willemse, while MJ Pelser, together with Lukhanyo Am are the turn-over kings with their four each.

The iconic Stadium has never looked better, and preparations are well underway for the British and Irish Lions.

The Emirates Lions host the greatest Touring Rugby team in the world on 3 July.

The Rainbow Cup SA match between the Emirates Lions and Cell C Sharks kicks off at 16:00.

Emirates Lions: EW Viljoen; Rabz Maxwane, Wandisile Simelane, Burger Odendaal (capt), Courtnall Skosan; Jordan Hendrikse, André Warner; Len Massyn, Vincent Tshituka, MJ Pelser; Reinhard Nothnagel, Ruben Schoeman, Carlu Sadie, Jaco Visagie, Sti Sithole. Replacements: PJ Botha, Ruan Dreyer, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Willem Alberts, Emmanuel Tshituka, Morné van den Berg, Fred Zeilinga, Dan Kriel

Ok so Jordan speel wel.

Dalk is ek verkeerd.

Fassi, Nkosi, Am, Bosch, en Kolisis speel nie. Terwyl hul A span voorry op die bank begin.

En Roelof Smit, as hy oraait is. Hy was puik teen die Cheetahs.

Really pathetic defensive effort, 1st time tackles cost us.

We also left a lot of points on the park 2 or 3 tries that were duffed.

Also, Stuart Barry is a disgrace.

LIONS vs SHARKS - DÉJÀ VU?

For the past 18 months we’ve been seeing this again, and again.. A sudden flare-up when the guys play brilliant rugby, and the next minute they collapse to a standard that can only be termed as mediocre. During the first 15 minutes of the match, the Lions dominated completely, when suddenly the lights went out. A Sharks team (that was not even at full strength) took total control in every facet of the game. Why.. how?! For starters, our line-outs were poor.. to put it mildly. Despite our top class forwards, our scrums were definitely not in full control either.

One can only speculate, but in my humble opinion I believe the problem lies in coaching and fitness. In the past it was predictable to see the Lions dominating the last 20 minutes – especially when playing a coastal side like the Sharks or Stormers. Contrary to that, we are now witnessing a Lions team that seems to fade in the last quarter of the match. We’ve said this many times before, but with the talent at our disposal, this is highly questionable. What on earth has gone wrong at the GLRU? Compared to our recent game against the Bulls, It’s like taking two steps forward, and three steps back.

Let’s compare it to cooking: If I give you all 28 the ingredients to make perfect Madras curry, but I don’t give you the recipe plus the correct chronological order, method and sequence to prepare and follow meticulously, it’s bound to turn out a flop. So, acquiring and combining all the best talent in the country won’t get you anywhere if you do not have a highly experienced chef "cooking it to perfection". Which poses another argument: “Too many cooks spoil the broth”. Isn’t our coaching staff a bit over-loaded? This might sound over-simplified, although I believe it’s a valid argument worth considering.

Summary:
There were periods when the Lions displayed some excellent skills, and looked extremely dangerous. Nothing wrong there, except that they consistently alternate that with some really foolish basic mistakes that makes them look totally helpless. We simply have to find a way where we can sustain the quality of play we are capable of. First time tackles, and senseless kicks up-field still remain a problem that needs urgent attention.

C'mon Lions - you're much better than this!

Jy is eintlik reg ja.

Pelser and Semilane also cost us a guaranteed try, so to single out Alberts is a little unfair.

I agree that the lineouts (Botha) along with our inability to clear at the ruck and Berry's inconsistent interpretation of the laws cost us the game

Most players are definitely not playing good enough. Simelane's poor handling an distribution was probably due to the distraction of the Springbok squad announcement. He was definitely not focused.

I felt Berry was equally consistently inconsistent towards both teams.

Has the "daylight" rule changed?
