The Boland Dames kept their SA Rugby Women’s Premier Division semi-final dreams alive with a dramatic 12-10 win over the Mastercard Golden Lions Women in Worcester on Saturday, the Border Ladies moved into second place on the log, courtesy of a victory over the Cell C Sharks Women, and the Bulls Daisies continued their absolute domination of the tournament by racking up a century of points against the EP Queens in Pretoria.

There were dramatic scenes at Boland Park in Worcester on Saturday when Boland pipped their visitors from Gauteng in the last play of the game. Scores were even at the break (5-5), but a Lions try in the second half edged them ahead.

The Dames launched a desperate attack in the last minute and following several pick-and-go’s by the pack, referee Bulela Qwane, awarded a penalty try to the home team, much to the delight of the locals.

The Border Ladies delivered a well-rounded performance in beating the Cell C Sharks Women 33-13 after leading 18-5 at the break. The visitors had clear intentions to get to a bonus point and scored six tries in Durban, with the home side only managing two.

The victory pushed Border four points clear of DHL Western Province on the log, although the Cape Town side has a game in hand.

Despite resting a couple of front-line players, the Bulls Daisies made a mockery of the EP Queens’ defence, scoring 16 tries at LC de Villiers Stadium in Pretoria. The home side held a 50-0 lead at the break and repeated that effort in the second half to register their biggest win over the Queens.

All teams are having a bye this weekend and the competition resumes on 22 July.

Women’s First Division

The Free State Women continued with their scoring spree in the league, this time dotting down 14 times against the Valke Women in Bloemfontein, with fullback Sne Mdletshe bagging five tries. The hosts held a 36-5 lead at the break and then scored 54 unanswered points in the second half.

Limpopo Blue Bulls Women scored a good victory in Welkom, beating the Griffons Women by 58-17 after leading by 20-8 at the break.

In Potchefstroom, the Leopards Women had to work hard to beat Griquas Women 24-10. The visitors came back strongly in the second half. The Leopards were up two tries to nil at the break, but the second half proved much closer, with both teams dotting down twice.

The SWD Eagirls were in devastating form in Oudtshoorn, where they ran in 14 tries past Pumas Women, who had no reply to the pace of the home side’s backline. The visitors offered some resistance in the opening half (26-5), but the Eagirls raced away to score 62 unanswered points for a 88-5 win.

The Free State Women (25) are five points clear of the SWD Eagirls (20) on the log after five bonus point wins so far. Limpopo (15), who like the Leopards (14) have won three of their five matches, moved past their Potchefstroom foes on the log due to an extra bonus point. The Valke (12) will also be happy about their progress, but not so much Griquas (6), Pumas (5) and Griffons, who are yet to register a log point.
