The likes of John Dobson and Jake White have received a welcome boost, as the buying power of SA’s top four rugby franchises has been hiked by millions of rands.

The annual salary cap for the Stormers, Sharks, Lions, and Vodacom Bulls has reportedly been increased from R67.2 million to R85 million for the 2023-24 season.

According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, the cap boost was approved during a meeting of the South African Rugby Employers’ Organisation, with ratification from the MyPlayers’ association expected in due course.

And an additional R10m hike has been set for the 2024-25 season.

Perhaps the most impactful development is the dispensation for each franchise to contract four senior ‘marquee players’ – in addition to the mandated 53-man squad – whose salaries do not count towards the team’s cap number.

Great news for the Sharks, Bulls and Stompies... they can now buy the rest of the talent from us "smaller" unions

Kyk, daar was dalk seker verbetering.
