Springbok lock Lood de Jager received further bad news on Wednesday after a second scan revealed his chest injury is much worse than expected and he will not take any further part in the 2018 season.

The injury already came as a massive blow to both the Vodacom Bulls and the Springboks as De Jager was the form lock forward in this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby tournament and was playing rugby reminiscent of his breakthrough 2015 season when he was named SA Rugby’s Player of the year for that year.

But while the initial diagnosis was set for four months on the sidelines, meaning De Jager would miss the England test series as well as part of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, it was decided to have a second scan to see if the injury was perhaps a little less aggravated after the swelling had subsided.

However, the second scan on Wednesday revealed worse news, that the tear in the chest wall muscle was worse than expected, needed surgery and would put De Jager out of action for six months.

The big lock will go under the knife on Thursday in Pretoria, meaning if the earliest he will be able to play will be in the middle of November, when the Springboks will be on tour in Europe. In such a case it would be highly unlikely for De Jager to make a comeback and it will be more likely to see him again in the 2019 season.

De Jager’s injury couldn’t come at a worse time for Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus, who is already expected to be without Eben Etzebeth as well for the England tests. Erasmus will also have to do without the influential Malcolm Marx, at least for the opening test against the English.

While there is substantial depth at lock at the moment, the Bok coaching squad will be looking for some consistent performances and no more injuries before they name their squad on the evening of the 26th of May.

At the moment the names of Franco Mostert and Pieter-Steph du Toit both should be certainties for the Bok squad, but looking further may be a bit more challenging for Erasmus and co, especially as both the names mentioned have played extensively at blindside flank this season.

Sharks captain Ruan Botha, Bulls lock RG Snyman and his partner Jason Jenkins should all be in with a shout for the position while Stormers JD Schickerling could be a dark horse for selection when the squad is named as well.

The Bulls, in the meantime, will see Snyman and Jenkins as their lock partnership as they head to Buenos Aires to take on the Jaguares this weekend, with coach John Mitchell disappointed to lose De Jager but looking forward to preparing his side for a very tough game in Argentina.

“You never want to see a teammate suffer but unfortunately it is part of the trade. Ultimately at the end of the day you are tested in this competition by your depth so you can’t just rely on top players being available all the time. While you feel for your teammate who has got a key injury, you’ve also got to get on and now it is somebody else’s chance to contribute to the team. Ultimately at the end of the day it will come down to how everybody else has contributed to the team in some form of way and now there are new players who will be given chances to contribute to the team on the field,” he added.

In related news, Springbok prop Lizo Gqoboka will consult a specialist on Wednesday to find out when he will be operated on for his toe injury, which has seen him ruled out for between four and six months.
