England coach Eddie Jones feels he made an error which cost his side in the Rugby World Cup final against South Africa.

England went into the contest as favourites after upsetting the All Blacks 19-7 in the semi-finals, but came unstuck against a determined Springbok side, losing 32-12.

In an interview with Uk-based The Telegraph, Jones said he erred in naming the same line-up for the final.

"I know in my head where we could have probably made improvements. One of the areas was that I probably made a mistake in terms of selection. That's all with the benefit of hindsight, but I should probably have refreshed the team for the final," Jones said.

England appeared rattled from the start against an imposing Springbok defence and the South Africans also annihilated the Red Roses at scrum time.

Jones added: "It was one of those days. Sometimes they start the game brilliantly and things come off for them.

"We start the game a little bit off, lacking a tiny bit of energy because we'd played four big games in a row. That's the reality of it - we just came unstuck."

Jones is staying put as England coach for at least two more years - when his current contract expires.

He'll also have the opportunity to take his mind off the World Cup final - a match he says he "probably won't watch" - when he takes charge of the Barbarians.

Jones included nine Springboks in his squad ahead of Saturday's match against Fiji at Twickenham.

The BaaBaas will also face Brazil in Sao Paolo (November 20) and Wales in Cardiff (November 30).

Barbarians squad:

Forwards: Tendai Mtawarira, Rory Best, Enrique Pieretto, Luke Jones, Matt Philip, Pete Samu, Marco van Staden, Josh Strauss, Andrew Makalio, Campese Maafu, Hencus van Wyk, Tyler Ardron, Angus Cottrell.

Backs:

Makazole Mapimpi, Mathieu Bastareaud, Lukhanyo Am, Jano Vermaak, David Havili, Morne Steyn, Santiago Iglesias, Curwin Bosch, Billy Meakes, Bautista Ezcurra, Andre Esterhuizen, Joe Powell, Dillyn Leyds

We smashed the AB's , and they beat the Boks, so we should beat the Boks. That must have been the thoughts going through the English players minds. Plus they looked finished after the NZ game. My immediate thought after the game was that the final was a step too far for the English. Even though SA had struggled against the Welsh, I always thought that we had something in reserve, and that we still had not seen the best of the Bokke.

Jones would have had to use his dirt trackers to put in a fresh team.

Even though we all cringed at the thought of 6-2 bench split in the playoffs, it was a master stroke by Rassie. And that's where Jones lost it, along with having his replacement no 3 "injured", to force uncontested scrums.

Rassie was the cleverer coach on the day.

I remember how many people (on this site included) was saying how focussed & determined the English looked after their win over NZ and how they "barely celebrated" as they are focussing on the final and winning the RWC....

----
On another note, I watched Masterclass on SS1 the day after the final and Swys highlighted how there was footage showing Sinckler throwing up in the dustbin just before the match and how he looked confused during the game (the 2 minutes) before he went of concussed. After Swys said that, Deon Davids mentioned that Kyle Sinckler was apparently sick during the week leading up to the final and barely trained. So that is already one massive selection error Eddie already made.

To me they looked like they had just completed a double Comrades Marathon. They were plain exhausted. There was no energy to celebrate. Most teams show some sort of happiness after winning, even after a friendly, let alone the most important match of the World Cup up to that point. The English could barely smile. I knew then that they had played their final. I always knee that SA still had some gas in the tank, and some tricks up their sleeve. The last 10 minutes against Wales showed me that.

Hulle was reg..

I agree 100% about the scrums. Dominate, there, win your own line out, and disrupt theirs so that they cannot set a maul, ie force them into tap downs and quick feed to the scrummie, and you will win more often than not.

I recently read an article on SARugbyMag (maybe it was the Guscot one, cannot remember) where the author spoke about SA's traditional strenghts and how we simplified rugby and focus only on certain of our traditional strengths and try to dominates the areas such as scrums, lineouts, breakdowns, advantage line and defence. And I was left thinking that is basically every area of the game? Tongue

So as they meant to try to say we play "limited" or reserved/boring rugby, what they dont realize is that if you dont focus on those things and dominating at those things, your attack will fail. Even if you are NZ.

do yourselves a favor and watch this video. We were all critical of the boks.  But the tactical brilliance of the final and how we executed it was just amazing

Ek het die video gesien. Baie insiggewend.
