Springbok and Stormers hooker Bongi Mbonambi is reportedly being pursued by the Southern Kings.

According to Netwerk24, the Kings have offered Mbonambi more than R10 million over the next two-and-a-half seasons.

This is believed to be R2 million more than what he would earn at the Stormers in the same period.

Mbonambi, who has played 29 Tests for the Springboks since making his debut in 2016, will have to decide whether he wants to play Super Rugby for the Stormers or PRO14 for the Southern Kings.

Mbonambi's agent, Gert Andries van der Merwe, said he will meet with the player in Pretoria on Saturday to discuss the matter.

"He would like to stay in South Africa for the British and Irish Lions tour in 2021," Van der Merwe said.

Mbonambi is not part of this weekend's Springbok 23-man squad to face Argentina at Loftus Versfeld.

Saturday's clash is scheduled for 17:05.

Teams:

South Africa

15 Warrick Gelant, 14 S'bu Nkosi, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Dillyn Leyds, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Marcell Coetzee, 7 Rynhardt Elstadt, 6 Siya Kolisi, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 RG Snyman, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Schalk Brits (captain), 1 Thomas du Toit

Is Bongi worth that much? He is a good solid player, not flashy. Looks like the Kings will lift their performance this year in the Pro 14.

Lets firstly see if he gets his first month's salary before we assume that the 10million is anything more than a pie in the sky.

Show me the money first. Kings sukkel tans om 'n kompeterende span vir eerste liga Currie te bekostig

Remember, they have a backing of a big consortium, being the first franchise to have a majority private shareholding. So their equity partners seem to have deep pockets.
I don't know how much money Altmann Ahlers has sunken into the Lions over the years, but it has been a fair amount. Unfortunately, he does not have unlimited funds, so we have to rely on sponsorships.

I don't think it's a majority shareholding, if I remember correctly it's a total shareholding, i.e. 100%

okay googled it, it was 74%

SA Rugby confirmed on Friday that a 74% shareholding has been sold to a company called The Greatest Rugby Company in the Whole Wide World, while the Eastern Province Rugby Union (EPRU) now own 26% of the shares. The owners of GRC are Loyiso Dotwana, Gary Markson, Rory Stear, Kenny Govender and Vuyo Zitumane.

I heard it was plenty millions (somewhere between 100 and 200), that was then converted to equity as the Lions can't ever pay it back

Reken mens kan met sekerheid sê dat die unie sou gevou het as dit nie vir Ahlers was nie. Ons kon op 'n stadium nie eers 'n super rugby hoofborg kry nie.

While the Lions are in a better position than most SA teams, it was not so long ago that we faced bankruptcy.
