Swys de Bruin advised Springbok management on Tuesday that he wished to be released from his role as an attack consultant with the team.

De Bruin made the request for “personal and medical reasons” and wished the team every success for the Rugby World Cup.

“Swys made a great contribution to the squad in his time with us and I’d like to thank him on behalf of his fellow management and the players he has worked with in the past 12 months,” said Rassie Erasmus, SA Rugby’s director of rugby.

“He brought a fresh perspective to one facet of the game and he’ll be hard to replace. I’d also like to thank the Lions Company PTY for releasing him to us and SA Rugby for supporting his appointment.”

De Bruin left the squad following the draw with New Zealand and has not been involved in the preparations for the match in Salta or this weekend’s Test against Argentina at Loftus Versfeld.

Erasmus said he would consider a number of options before naming a specialist replacement coach on a short-term basis.

Erasmus said: “This was not something we were expecting but our planning has been thorough and it’s something we can manage.”

Saturday’s match against Argentina kicks off at 17h05 and tickets are available fromwww.ticketpro.co.za and the Loftus Versfeld ticket office.

I dont know the background, but If one of my employees had to drop me like this I would get really agitated.

The whole good friday thing this year was also a joke. Maybe there is something seriously wrong behind the scenes, but we need stability not drama.

If there is something seriously life threatening , then I can sympathize, however if its just a question of "to much pressure", then the lions should sack the oke as well.

You cant work with someone that wants to jump ship everytime things get heated.

It surely can't be pressure related!? The boks just won the championship for the first time in 10 years, and are actually in a good place at the moment!

Dalk moet 'n Cash/Erasmus kombinasie vlg jaar oorneem?

Really feel for Swys.
We need to remember that mental health is not something to laugh at or underestimate. Those of us who are blessed not to have these issues cannot understand what it is like to go through this.
I hope the Lions make an effort to help him, maybe giving him a sabbatical of some sorts to deal with his issues.

@Lion4ever

I totally agree, its a sickness. The point is if Rassie was in a car crash and lost his eye site, then he wouldn't be the bok coach.

If Swys cant cope, then he cant cope. It its sad, but it is what it is.

Agree, mental health issues are health issues just like cancer or heart desease. It's not as if he decides when to be able to take the pressure and when not. Furthermore, mental health issues are not always pressure related, so it doesn't mean that if you have mental health issues, "you cant take pressure". Sometimes people with mental health issues can handle pressure better than healthy people.

Eish... Toffie vir my...lol... Jammer ek was regtig onder die indruk dat die wedstryd net voor middernag afgeskop het, dit is hoekom ek nie eers die wedstryd gekyk het nie...

Swys de Bruin advised Springbok management on Tuesday that he wished to be released from his role as an attack consultant with the team.

De Bruin made the request for “personal and medical reasons” and wished the team every success for the Rugby World Cup.

It is not the first time De Bruin had walked away from a coaching gig.

He returned home from New Zealand during the Lions’ Super Rugby tour to Australasia earlier this year and later admitted he was suffering from a ‘stress-related’ emotional condition.

Although the announcement was only made on Wednesday, it has come to light that he quit the team after the 16-all draw with New Zealand last month.

He did not stay on for the training camp in Auckland an the the 46-13 win over Argentina in Salta this past weekend – the latter cliching the Rugby Championship for the Springboks for the first time.

He has also has not been involved in the preparations for the Test against Argentina at Loftus Versfeld this coming Saturday.

“Swys made a great contribution to the squad in his time with us and I’d like to thank him on behalf of his fellow management and the players he has worked with in the past 12 months,” Bok coach Rassie Erasmus said.

“He brought a fresh perspective to one facet of the game and he’ll be hard to replace.

“I’d also like to thank the Lions Company PTY for releasing him to us and SA Rugby for supporting his appointment.”

Erasmus said he would consider a number of options before naming a specialist replacement coach on a short-term basis.

Erasmus said: “This was not something we were expecting but our planning has been thorough and it’s something we can manage.”

I agree.

At the moment we're all speculating what the problem is, that's why I said he should issue a press release s soon as possible
