    Posted: 01-Sep-2021 at 2:03pm

The Lions Rugby Company have today announced the appointment three former Springboks to bolster their coaching setup ahead of the inaugural United Rugby Championship (URC) competition starting 24 September 2021.

Head coach Ivan ‘Cash’ Rooyen will be supported by Albert Van den Berg (forwards and lineouts coach), Ricardo Loubscher (backline, attack and skills coach) and Jaque Fourie (defence coach)

Lions Rugby Company CEO Rudolf Straueli said:

"These are exciting times for the Lions ahead of the URC competition. As we embark on our debut season in Europe, we look forward to exposing our players and coaching staff to what will surely be a competitive environment. "

"We are particularly excited to welcome fresh ideas, experience and value our new coaches will bring to our setup as we begin preparations before jetting off in a few weeks. We wish the players and management all the best as they begin their preparations.”

Straueli further went on to encourage the Lions faithful to back their team ahead of the northern hemisphere competition.

“It’s been a challenging year and we have taken a few learnings from those experiences. We now more than ever encourage our fans and supporters to get behind their team as we prepare to face tough opposition abroad and at home.”

So loop hy.. dink steeds Cash se dae is getel, dink die timing speel n groter rol oor hoekom hy steeds daar is.

Been a very rough campaign. Cash did have some good results before this Currie Cup. Then the wheels came off. I still think that he has potential. Unfortunately he was thrown in at the deep end too soon as a coach.
It will be a huge test of his character if he turns this team around, and will be the making of him as a coach.

Eish, administrators again fast asleep. Zak Burger, Eduan Keyter, Verity-Am, Gideon van der Merwe are all players that were available for recruitment. Even the Cheetahs are outbidding us for talent.

Clearly the guys at the top are also the issue. They are happy with Cash.

You bring in consultants early in a coaches reign when things are bumpy. Maybe the head coach or assistants are a little inexperienced or need some outside perspective but you still believe in them.

After that, maybe 1 season of results being below expectations you might change the assistant coaches. You still believe in the head coach but things need to change.

However, if after 2 - 3 seasons results are getting worse then the head coach has to go. He picks the team, sets the tactics and creates the team culture.

We sit here with Cash being the longest serving head coach of a major team in SA but his performance is the worst. Add to that, he took over the best team in SA that had not lost to another SA team in Super Rugby for several years and it looks terrible. Admittedly we were beginning to slide a bit under Swys but there is difference between - not quite as good - and our current state of finishing behind teams on half our budget and amateur facilities. Literally we are the worst team in the Currie Cup and in normal times we would be in a promotion/relegation battle and facing life in Div. 1.

But Altmann Allers, Neville Jardin, Rudolf Straeuli and co think:  Cash in great and Cash must stay. Straeuli I get, where else can his son live his dream of being a pro rugby player despite no Craven week, no academy junior rugby or anything outside of Kearsney 1st Team? But Altmann...surely he cares about his investment...?
