The old guard‚ it would appear‚ keep trickling back.

The Lions on Tuesday confirmed they are in talks to bring one of their former heroes‚ Willem Alberts‚ back to Ellis Park for next season’s Super Rugby campaign.

This follows hot on the heels of them securing the services of Springbok tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis.

Alberts made his name with the Lions between 2005 and 2009 and then moved to the Sharks‚ before going on to Stade Francais in 2015.

He missed much of the following season due to a torn bicep but has played in the French capital since.

However‚ with the recent departure of former Bok coach Heyneke Meyer‚ things are up in the air in Paris.

Alberts‚ now 35‚ is an impactful backrower who played in 43 Tests for the Springboks.

Due to his exaggerated physical dimensions he packs a punch in the collisions‚ whether he has the ball or not.

He earned the nickname ‘the bone collector’ at school for the regularity opponents who crossed his path suffer fractures.

His last Test was in the 20-18 defeat to Italy in Florence in 2016.

Like Du Plessis‚ Alberts could bring huge experience to the Lions.

It will be particularly valuable with Warren Whiteley ruled out of next year’s Super Rugby.

Bone Collector heading to the Lions

Former Springbok flanker Willem Alberts is set to become a Lions player again next week.

The man they call “The Bone Collector” because of his big tackling is expected back in Joburg sometime next week to undergo medical testing at the Lions.

Alberts has played for Stade Francais for the last four years and before that he turned out for the Sharks and Lions.

Lions chief executive Rudolf Straeuli confirmed yesterday that the 35-year-old would arrive at the Lions next week.

“He will then undergo medicals. No contracts are signed before a player passes the medical tests,” said Straeuli.

Alberts, who is comfortable at lock as well as in the back-row, played for the Lions between 2005 and 2009 and then represented the Sharks on 73 occasions before heading to France. He also played 43 Tests for the Boks. The Lions have already signed another former Bok veteran for next season’s Super Rugby campaign, namely tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis, but Straeuli said there were no plans to sign any other big-name players just yet. Some of the other players signed by the Lions - who were Super Rugby runners-up for three seasons between 2016 and 2018 - include Dan Kriel, Roelof Smit and Jamba Ulengo.

Straeuli also confirmed yesterday that rising loose-forward star Hacjivah Dayimani - currently suffering from an ankle injury which has ruled him out of this weekend’s Sevens tournament in Cape Town - would be available for the Lions in the 2020 Super Rugby campaign despite his squad-based role with the Blitzboks at the moment.

Meanwhile, the Lions are currently wrapping up their pre-Christmas training programme, which concludes at the end of next week before the squad go on leave.

Straeuli said all the coaches involved with the Super Rugby team had signed agreements with the Lions Rugby Company and the Lions would announce the specific roles of the coaches in due course.

Experienced captain Warren Whiteley, who has been ruled out of the 2020 Super Rugby campaign because of injury, will also fill a coaching role next year, but it is not yet known what role that will be.

“Warren will play a role and we will announce this in due course,” is all Straeuli said on the matter.

The Lions kick off their 2020 challenge with a trip to Argentina and date with the Jaguares first-up next year.

Former Bok 'days away' from signing deal with Lions

Former Springbok behemoth Willem Alberts is set to make his return to the Lions next week.

The forward - dubbed the Bone Collector - has come full circle. Alberts made his professional debut for the Lions in 2005 and is reported to be days away from signing a new contract with his former club.

Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli confirmed to The Star that Alberts will arrive in South Africa next week.

"He will then undergo medicals," said the former Springbok coach.

"No contracts are signed before a player passes the medical tests."

The 43-Test veteran last ran out for the Springboks in 2016 and has been plying his trade for Stade Francais in Paris since 2015.

The Lions also signed former Springbok prop Jannie du Plessis to bolster their ranks. He joins the talented Jamba Ulengo, Dan Kriel and Roelof Smit in furthering their careers in Johannesburg.

The Lions have been hard hit by a number of departures and injuries to key players and are looking to fill the voids across the park ahead of the tournament which starts with a trip to Argentina to face the Jaguares for new coach Ivan van Rooyen on Saturday, February 1.

In addition, Hacjivah Dayimani will split his attention between Super Rugby and playing for the Blitzboks, while skipper Warren Whiteley has a long-term injury which has sidelined him from rugby for the foreseeable future.

Go LIONS!!!!!

where are Mahuza and Coetzee? I know Kwagga and Marx have been given a sabbatical to go earn money.

Madosh Tambwe - Hy is 'n groot verlies.

Harold Vorster - Het baie spoed verloor agv sy beserings (in my opinie).

(Ek sien hy en Combrinck is albei nou by Stade Francais.)

Nic Groom - Good Riddance!!!!!!

Stephan Lewies - Good Riddance!!!!!

Malcolm Marx - Groot verlies!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go LIONS!!!!!
