https://www.netwerk24.com/Sport/Rugby/Super-Rugby/whiteley-speel-nie-superrugby-vir-leeus-in-2020-20191121

https://www.hugerugby.news/international/steyns-rugby-career-could-be-over/

Springboks great Frans Steyn looks likely to at least pull the curtain down on his European career in order to return to his homeland.

The two-time Rugby World Cup winner, who managed to pick up medals from the 2007 edition of the tournament and this year’s one, beating England in both finals, is currently contracted to French Top 14 giants Montpellier.

However, it is believed that he has held discussions with the club about ending his contract come the end of January instead of when it is supposed to expire in July and speaking to South African news-outlet Volksblad, he seems keen on settling down in his homeland.

The 32-year-old has a family farm in Bloemfontein and it is understood this is not the first time he has made the suggestion to return to the area, but it now looks more likely than ever that he will get what he likes.

Steyn is expected to return to the French club next week, where he would play until January before his possible move back to South Africa.

At this time it is unknown whether the back would continue his rugby career with local professional side the Cheetahs, who play in the PRO14, or whether he will end his career early, having played at the top level for such a long time already.

Possibly the saddest thing I've read in a while, an amazing player and a leader 2nd to none. Captain my Captain.

That a decent side, I would just change it up a bit:

15 Andries Coetzee; 14 Tyrone Green, 13 Wandisile Simelane, 12 Elton Jantjies,, 11 Courtnall Skosan; 10 Gianni Lombard 9 Ross Cronje ; 8 Cyle Brink, 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 Roelof Smit, 5 Marvin Orie, 4 Ruben Schoeman, 3 Carlü Sadie, 2 Bismarck, 1 Dylan Smith

16 Jan-Henning Campher, 17 Jannie du Plessis, 18 Sti Sithole, 19 Ruan Vermaak, 20 Marnus Schoeman, 21 André Warner, 22 Dan Kriel 23 Stean Pienaar

Who will be your captain ? I would make Elton captain, I know he has his critics, but he is part of the leadership group with us and the boks as well.

Herbst hasen't impressed me, I would drop him out of the 23.

I'm sure that Jannie would start, and that Sadie will play off the bench once Jannie is tired.

Ross better step up and improve his game, he wasn't very good this year. Otherwise I'd play him off the bench

That would also make sense, but rugby is changing your bench has to be very strong, especially up front. Will be good to have some experience on the field in the 80th minute when the game is really won or lost

That's why I would have Jannie come on later.

Warner can also start and Ross can come on to close the game with the same logic.

Niela, that would be an awesome attacking back line, problem is the size of the guys you picked. You don't have one player that can take the ball up in contact. With rush defense being our biggest problem over the past few years you really do need a big 12 to keep the defense guessing. Defense will also be a big issue, hopefully Green and Andries will get the best out of each other. Things are starting to shape up very nicely.

Transvaal, not sure Sadie will sign with the Lions if he is not a starter. I can't see how he would not be a stater after last year, he was incredible in open play and don't think anyone enjoyed scrumming against him. Jannie scrum has always been good, but that is about it with the years of experience his brings as well. Also he can scrum both side, so that is so valuable of the bench.

Well it sounds like Sadie did sign up to join us, it just hasn't been officially confirmed

Will be really sad if WW finally has to retire due to injury. He is a true gentleman of the game, talented and a great leader. We will miss him on the field, but his presence in the coaching structures will be a huge factor for us.

I see the 2 potential teams mentioned here have the traditional 5-3 bench split. If we had to go with Rassie's 6-2 "bomb squad" version, how would that look?

L4E, we can do it with a player like Hacjivah Dayimani. So either Stean Pienaar or Gianni Lombard will be replaced but I don't think Cash will do it as we are not an defensive side.

From his media interviews I get the idea that Cash is going to change that.

In our last season under Ackers our defence was a strength and we conceded the least number of tries in SR (27) but Swys changed that again to scoring more points as being most important.

Another thing, reading Cash's statements, is that he'll be looking to improve our tactical kicking. Not change us into a kicking team but being able to change our game up with an effective kicking game when needed

The only way you can change it is getting an experience defense coach, I don't see that happening. I do believe our defense will improve from last year (can't really get worst), but our game plan will not change. I see Dobson is talking about changing the game plan and following Rassie's idea. It will not work, you need 2 massive packs and WP does not have that. Also they don't have Nienaber, so it might be a long season even with the boks they have.

They have a large portion of the bok pack, don't they? Only EE and 1 other bok I can't remember now (might be De Allende) won't be available to them in 2020. So it should be fairly easy for them to continue the bok gameplan

Glad to hear that management realize the importance of improving defense as well as tactical kicking. Other aspects that need urgent attention is ball retention as well as our mauling technique by our forwards. Think Whitely will help guide our forwards in these areas.
