    Posted: 30-Oct-2019 at 8:08am
The Lions Rugby Company is pleased to announce Ivan van Rooyen as Head Coach of the Emirates Lions.

“Ivan van Rooyen is someone who can build on the successes of past years. He has proven his worth within the
Lions Company Structures,” said Rudolf Straeuli, CEO of the Lions Rugby Company (LRC).

The Company will ensure Van Rooyen has the correct support system, management team and consultants for a
successful 2020 Super Rugby Campaign.

Altmann Allers, Chairman and Owner of LRC credited Van Rooyen who positioned himself as the most impressive
candidate during the recruitment process. “In Ivan we have an outstanding coach that covers all areas. His
extensive knowledge of the Lions culture coupled with his scientific background is paramount in crucial decision
making factors.”

The new coach said the Lions has been his home since 2009, “and it is all I know.”

He added: “We have the opportunity to create something very special. We have a young but dynamic team and a
‘blank canvas’. It is all up to us what we make of it. Standing in front of that ‘blank canvas’, we will establish clear
goals, we will decide who will be involved in this process, what will success look like and what tools we will use to
measure our success. I am truly blessed to do what I love to do,” he said.

VAN ROOYENS’ RUGBY BACKGROUND:
Ivan ‘Cash’ van Rooyen joined the Lions in 2009 after hanging up his boots as a player (Lions juniors, Lions sevens,
Valke Currie Cup).

The sport scientist worked with the junior sides and Vodacom Cup until 2011 and also assisted Wayne Taylor with
the Super Rugby and senior Currie Cup sides.

He became head of Strength and Conditioning in 2012 and still holds this position.

The Lions continued success since 2014 and subsequent Vodacom Super Rugby finals in 2016 and 2017 was also
due to the high level of fitness installed by Van Rooyen.

He headed up the coaching staff of the Lions in the 2018 and 2019 Currie Cup seasons with the team advancing to
the final this year.

Ivan coached the Lions Currie Cup side in the 2018 and 2019 seasons and achieved 9 wins from 15 matches for a 60% win record. He also took the Lions to the Currie Cup final in 2019, which they lost 28-31 against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

Good that we "promote from within", bad that we don't have someone with a really solid track record and experience.

It will be very interesting to see the assistant coaching staff.

Coach Lemmer was my coach at varsity, he is a very astute forwards coach. Where does that leave WW, maybe he should be the defense or attack coach ?

Importantly, Van Rooyen also has the support of majority shareholder Altman Allers, who allegedly now wants a more active say in team operations.

“In Ivan we have an outstanding coach that covers all areas. His extensive knowledge of the Lions culture coupled with his scientific background is paramount in crucial decision making factors,” said Allers.

However, the Lions’ coaching group remains relatively inexperienced, which suggests that the Lions’ commitment towards a “correct support system” means there could be some interesting faces showing up as consultants during the season.

Ek dink Warren gaan nog n seisoen of wat speel, as sy knie reg is. miskien kan hulle hom as n tipe player/coach begin inspan, dalk as defence coach, of so iets.

I like the way the Lions have drawn our last 2 coaches through the ranks, even more so in Cash's case. I am just a bit worried about his inexperience.

He has been involved with the SR team since 2012, so I don't think he is that inexperienced

He has been with the Lions in their coaching structures since 2009, but primarily as the fitness guru. Actual coaching experience not so much. I have no doubt that he knows his rugby, but it is his inexperience as a head coach that is a bit worrying.

I don't think AA "having a more active say in team operations" is a good thing. Having too many chiefs confuses everyone. If they agreed on clear lines and roles (which they hopefully probably have)then it could work.

But on the other hand Darren, I completely understand why. If I "invested" money and it doesn't seems I will ever get any of it back, I would also want to be more involved.

The Lions will finalise their coaching structures in the next week, reveals newly-appointed head coach Ivan van Rooyen.

The sudden departure of Swys de Bruin earlier this month has certainly stunned one of South Africa’s most successful franchises.

The split ended a seven-year relationship between De Bruin and the Lions.

The former Strength and Conditioning coach has been with the union since 2009 and his first assignment in the hot seat is far from easy.

The 37-year-old has just three months to finalize his coaching structures and prepare for their opening Super Rugby match against the Jaguares in Buenos Aires on February 1.

“The first Super Rugby match against Jaguares in Argentina is a big focus point for us. It is important to get everyone ready – physically and mentally,” Van Rooyen told rugby365com

“I think getting our system and management in place very early, the more specific our preparation can be ahead of the opening match against the Jaguares.”

He added: “It’s mainly about getting clarity in our direction and our expectations.”

To add further uncertainty around the coaching structures, it has been reported that Joey Mongalo and Bart Schoeman’s contracts have not been renewed.

While there have been suggestions Lions captain Warren Whiteley could be added to the coaching roster.

Whiteley, who has been sidelined due to long-term knee injury,  has assisted the Golden Lions’ coaching staff during this year’s Currie Cup season.

When asked if Whiteley may be in talks about joining the Super Rugby staff, Van Rooyen did not deny nor confirm the claim.

“Whiteley is still focused on seeing if he can return to the field.

“During the Currie Cup we definitely used him in terms of coaching analysis – he was a big link between the coaches and players.

“But currently he is doing rehab and still learning and spending time with the coaches.”

Hopefully the players are also fit to play.. Ouch Can't have guys like WW/Cyle/Dylan etc being injured for long periods. Although we know WW is in doubt, we really need the others to put in a whole season.
