@Leeubok

Haha, I dont get take things personally. I want us to be the best team in SA and in super rugby, we all want that.

Our backline is settled yes, but our biggest issues start upfront.

You can have the best backline in the world, you wont win if you dont have the forwards. Just ask the Crusaders.

The Crusaders, ONE starting all black back, ONE. Yet everyone goes on about how dangerous they are. They are dangerous, but their backs are good because the forwards lay the platform first.

As supporters We must be critical and always strive to be better, however we must be fair as well , what you say is 100% correct  , but that doesn't mean we have the depth we had in the past or that we should have to get to a final.

I never use the "we are building excuse" It annoys me as well, However this year , for the very first time I actually feel that we are definitely in a building phase. We haven't been building for the last 4 years, not at all.

Yes, we have many caps in the backs and we have the best hooker in the world. BUT we simply don't have the depth to win super rugby. That is the major issue, Depth. Saying we are in a building phase is also not just referring to who we do have, but also who we dont have.

We need to build that depth again. The guy that starts AND the up and coming youngster.

Everyone knows that rugby is controlled by the golden thread.

2. Marx (We literally cannot do better here)
4. Lost Ferreira and Erasmus . We have an depth issue here
5. Lost Sous . Between Marx and sous, probably the best 2 lions players we had on the park teh last 3 years. We are struggling to find someone new here.
8. WW and Kwagga , both not playing much. We dont have an answer.
9. Lost Faf , massive loss for us, our game relies on SPEED, with Faf gone we are just not as effective.
10. We never to the time to get a backup for Elton . HUGE OWN GOAL.
15. Coetzee started off poorly, but stepped up in the last couple of games. Green also looking like a very able backup (Or starter) at 15.

So in the key positions on the field, we only have 2 and 15 covered. All the others we just dont have world class players or decent back up come injuries.

We have great talent coming trough, but again it takes time for them to settle in and this year they must just get experience and game time. Guys like :

Tsihtsuka, Lombaard, Green, Sadie, Simelane.

Again, we need to groom new 9's (I know), and more locks. Find the next Sous , but also that solid lock combo that works well together.

Niela, I do agree 100% that we donn't have the depth. In that sense we are building, as Swys blooded a number of youngsters this year. Hopefully next year they will do even better.

I've said throughout this season our major problem is at lock - so in agreement there.

Loose forward I think we are reasonably covered. A bit less so now that Kwagga and WW are both out, but I think a combination of Brink, Schoeman, Thsituka/Daymani isn't too bad. Brink will have to step up and rediscover his form of 2018 before he got injured.

As for Faf - he left a number of years ago and Ross has done well to fill the void. He's not nearly the same player as Faf however. So here I blame whoever had the brainfart of thinking hmmm.. Who can we replace Faf with? I know, Nick Groom! That guy must be shot!

In general I think our squad should've performed better than they did this year. With the lack of depth at the moment losing against a strong NZ or Aus team is one thing, but  to win only 1 game out of 5 against SA opposition so far is just not acceptable. If we beat the Bulls we'll be on 2/6 against SA teams. That is shocking considering our dominance the previous 3 years

So Marius vd Westhuizen will cost the lions the game this weekend.. I dont know what we have done to deserve all this hate from the referees and officials.

As for the loose trio, I hope we get to see James Venter this weekend.

Dayimani on the wing all the time drives me crazy. He's there so much it seems that he is told to do so.

Did anyone else feel that Reynolds was "flat" on Saturday? He doesn't seem to offer any attacking punch, he does the basics well but a guy like Lombard is dangerous i don't get that same feeling from Shaun.

Yes, I did too. The entire backline was flat. Each guy got the ball almost standing still, and then it looked like they didn't know what to do.

But the previous game they were brilliant, so I don't think one should write Reynolds off after 1 bad game. He also did really well that one game he played at 12 next to Jantjies, so he can run with the ball the day he feels like it (or the coaches tell him he can)

But Elton seems to have hit a terrible dip in form. he's making too many very costly mistakes. I would start with Reynolds again

The 'Canes's rush defence/ offside all the time made it impossible for the backs to play. All we did to counter this was try and get the ball wide as soon as possible which obviously didn't wok.

We need to counter the Bulls physically , we cant get bullied. It happened against the sharks and in a sense against the canes as well, that puts the backs on the back foot.

Here is my starting XV for the weekend.

1. Smith
2. Marx.
3. Saide
4. Nothnagel
5. Orie
6. Venter
7. Tshituka
8. Brink
9. Cronje
10. Jantjies
11. Dyanti
12. Voster
13. Mapoe
14. Skosan
15. Coetzee

Venter is a bit bulkier and could bring the physicality , would like to see how he combines with a Tshituka.

Brink probably a little slow for an 8, but vs a team like the bulls that wouldn't be an issue anyway. With those 3 loosies, I think we can match them . (Plus we have Marx...)

Our scrum should dominate , no issues there.

Line outs could be an issue, They have very tall locks and I am concerned that they steal our ball.

The backs are pretty evenly matched, I feel that our back 3 is stronger and we can hit them out wide.

The nice thing about the bulls is that their defensive line speed is very slow, so although they defend well, they are not in your face, so that plays into our hands, we should look a lot less "flat" vs last weekend.

I am not convinced that Nothnagel is ready for this level yet, but guess we don't have many options at lock. Will Lewies still be out?

Any form of rush defence, pushing offside line, has been a big problem for the lions the past 3-4 seasons.

I will only start worrying when I see our side.

If we pick the right combinations we can beat them.

It could be a cracking game, looking forward to it. We basically have 4 knock out games to go LOL

They have also been on a very long tour, and although they performed very well, they must be a little tired.

Maybe we have some more injury concerns.. Maybe we are playing mind games? Maybe we are sending them the points?

I hope that they have a big announcement later.. perhaps more signings?

If WW is ready I would change my loosies from
6. Venter
7. Tshituka
8. Brink

to

6. Brink
7. Tshituka
8. WW

And give Venter a run from the bench
