Jantjies has his critics
If you look at the facts/stats , he is probably the best player we’ve ever had. I’ll pick him on his loyalty is alone. Attitude is 90% , the rest can be taught

Weet glad nie hoe dit werk nie, maar hel, as 'n speler wil bly kan niemand hom mos dwing om te gaan nie? Of besluit die agent waarheen 'n speler moet skuif sonder enige insae van die speler self?

we have so many outside backs.
I received some kick back on the Josh Strauss suggestion at lock. But no point in wasting money on players where we have depth already. We also want to bring back combrink and mopoe. Yet more outside backs. It’s weird

I agree with you 100%. We dont need any more outside backs, we need a proper inside center that can take the ball from Elton playing flat, someone like Rohan or Esterhuizen. We need a proper hooker, would have loved to see Dweba (he went to school in Randfontein) and we desperately need a hard no nonsense lock. Why we keep spending money on outside backs is beyond me. Our backs, save for a 12, is not the problem...

I wonder of Commies and Mapoe are/were genuine considerations or if it was just another rumour..

There's a typing error - Swiel and Kade Wolhuter signed for WP.
Personally I hope we don't resign Dreyer, Van Rooyen, Mapoe or Combrink. We need to invest in the talent we have and while the props can play longer, we have loads of depth at prop. Mapoe and Combrink aren't the players they were 3 years ago. What message does it send Pienaar, Rass, Simelane, van der Schyff, Mollentze, Matthews, Swanepoel and even Muzi Manyike (former SA schools captain)?

All these backs on our shopping list, but we DESPERATELY need locks and a hooker!! unless they are developing the juniors... which Dameon Venter/P Botha i think ? Jan-Henning i see singed another 2 years, although i have questions about whether he is Super RUgby level... i am also a bit worried at scrumhalf, didnt we sign a youngster recently ? one of those lighties form Glenwood ?

@ Zibbie & Valie, I agree teams need a few old heads with steady hands to guide the young talent, especially when those players are Lions' legends and know the team culture. Common sense needs to be applied, when you have loads of talented young backs - why sign more, older backs on big salaries? Surely taking the money you would spend of those players and bring in 1, quality hooker or lock would be better?
When "experience" is blocking talent's pathway the talent will leave and become Springboks at another union. James Venter (path to the first team blocked by Schoeman) is already in the bok mix, and with Mapimpi in Japan I wouldn't be surprised if Madosh Tambwe puts himself in the bok mix. We currently have: Age Senior Games Jannie du Plessis 38 401 Wilhelm van der Sluys 29 73 Marvin Orie 27 131 Marnus Schoeman 31 159 Jaco Kriel 31 177 Willem Alberts 36 296 Ross Cronje 31 202 Elton Janjties 30 260 Courtnall Skosan 29 136 Andries Coetzee 30 163 Do we really need more? Especially backs and loose forwards? We have a 45 player and 60 million cap in place. Young players are demanding more money earlier these days, and decent to average, established players returning from Europe want a premium. We have a similar problem European clubs have (https://rugby365.com/countries/japan/kiwi-coach-condemns-big-money-deals-for-super-players/). So should we use up a sizable piece of our player budget on old hands, and let the most promising juniors go? The answer is in the middle, get a few experienced players in, but be very selective about which players and which positions. These guys either need to be current Springboks (or currently in the mix), or they need to add huge value both on and off the field. Players nearing 30 that are average or slightly above average but not in the Springbok picture need to be moved onto Europe or Japan with the exception of guys that add huge value on and off the field (harsh but this works brilliantly in New Zealand). This keeps pathways clear for top youngsters. Instead of having a talented 22 year old that is too old for age-group rugby, but can't get a game because 30 something year olds, who will never be Springboks, are keeping them out of the match 23, causing the youngster's career to stall or them moving to other unions or overseas out of frustration - let them play, develop and reach their potential in a Lions jersey. Spend good money on a few quality, experienced hands in key positions to mentor young talent, then spend more on top juniors and keep the pathways clear for them to progress. Lions rugby and SA rugby would benefit from this.

there is a huge difference between qualify and quantity....
Looking at our "senior guys" We currently have: Age Senior Games STATUS Jannie du Plessis 38 401 Has been - average Wilhelm van der Sluys 29 73 Old yes, senior - NO Marvin Orie 27 131 Very average Marnus Schoeman 31 159 Decent super rugby senior - not a bok Jaco Kriel 31 177 Decent - Very few tests -Injury prone Willem Alberts 36 296 Great senior player Ross Cronje 31 202 Decent - Very few tests Elton Janjties 30 260 Probbaly our most valuable senior player Courtnall Skosan 29 136 Decent - Very few tests -Injury prone Andries Coetzee 30 163 Decent - Very few tests -Injury prone I think you will agree that we need proper senior players, springboks or internationals. Anyone with less than 25 test are not so senior at all.. |

Agreed. It will be great if we can sign Combrinck, Mapoe, Dreyer and Van Rooyen. They all were key parts of the three Super Rugby finals that the Lions reached. It will be great for the young players to have all of them back for the Lions

I agree. We need a few quality experience in key positions.
Although I don't necessary believe tests are the only measure of a players experience and quality. How many tests has Johan Goosen played? Arno Botha? Kolbe before last year? I feel guys that are current boks or in the bok mix, or world star is a better criteria. The only exception being every now and then a guy that has tons of experience, is at the end of their career and doesn't mind being backup/waterboy - but adds huge value in mentoring and on the training field, that way you can also help bring through the next generation of coaches. Think how much of our budget is tied up in these 10 players and then we want to add Dreyer, van Rooyen, Fourie, Mapoe and Combrinck. All were great servants of Lions rugby, but don't meet the 25 test idea you had, and are more than likely not in the Springbok plans. The fact that their European sides are willing to let them leave, even releasing them with a year on their contract in some of these guys cases tells you everything about their current on field performance levels. I would rather we cut some of the deadwood, free up some money and then went big on a hooker and lock.
