Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies is back in the selection mix for this weekend’s Super Rugby match against the Hurricanes at Ellis Park.

Jantjies missed last weekend’s 41-22 round 16 win against the Stormers after being axed from the side following a breach of team protocol.


The Springbok No 10 started every game for the Lions this season until last weekend, when rookie flyhalf Shaun Reynolds slotted in to full Jantjies’ boots. The franchise’s number two flyhalf and the back-up to Jantjies in the earlier rounds, Gianni Lombard, has been sidelined with a knee problem. He’ll only play again next season.

A spokesperson of the Lions confirmed on Monday morning that the Jantjies matter had been dealt with and that the player was training with his team-mates.

“He is available to play this weekend,” said Annemie Bester, the team’s media manager.

Despite the absence of Jantjies, the Lions produced a quality performance, which included their scoring six tries, to down the men from the Cape on Saturday. The log points earned took the Lions to second in the SA Conference and keeps alive their chances of playing in the knockout rounds in three weeks’ time.

The Lions’ final round-robin match, after this weekend’s clash with the Hurricanes (kick-off 3pm), is against the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.

Hmm, wat dink julle? Begin mens weer met Jantjies met Reynolds op die bank, of hou Reynolds in die begin span? Ek het daarvan gehou dat Boeboes meer betrokke was, met lynskoppe en so aan. Hy skop beter as Jantjies. En hy het nogals gereeld in die 10 kanaal gespeel ook, wat goed was. Reynolds se skoppe pale toe was netnie goed nie, anders het hy OK gedoen

Nee ek sal vir Jantjes speel. Dis die Hurricanes, ons het 'n steady kop nodig op 10. Reynolds het uiteindelik gewys hy behoort daar, en dis great, maar Elton het nou lekker "gerus", so ek dink hy gaan 'n blinder he.

Ek sal nie aan die span verander nie. Jantjies het 'n bad attitude gehad en dit beiinvloed almal rondom hom. Boeboes het baie goed en ver lyn toe geskop en was baie betrokke. Reynolds het ook 'n goeie game gehad. Hyt ne 2 skoppe gemis maar ek dink hy was maar senuweeagtig in die begin. D

Ek sou se Shaun het niks verkeerds gedoen dat hy verdien om gedrop te word nie. Laat Elton van die bench af begin. Kyk hoe goed het dit vir Vorster, Mapoe en Boeboes gedoen toe hulle n slag weer moes fight vir hulle plekke.

Ek sal vir Jantjies speel.. teen 'n speler soos Barrett het jy iemand nodig wat al 'n paar keer om die blok was en wat sukses geproe het teen Barrett en die hurricanes. Ek is baie bly dat Reynolds goed gedoen het en die trappie geneem het, maar ons was oor die stormers in alle fasette. Die druk gaan baie groter wees hierdie saterdag.

Geen rede om Jantjies te begin nie. Hoe baie sou Jantjies gespeel het as Lombard nie beseer geraak het nie? Dis ter herinnering van hoe lank Jantjies nou al aanploeter die seisoen. Ek is 'n groot EJ fan, maar sy spel die seisoen is nie op standaard en dit het oorgekook in 'n patetiese wedstryd deur hom laasnaweek teen die Sharks. Net omdat jy 'n paar keer om die blok was en ervaring het beteken nie jy's goed genoeg nie.

Maar, die afrigtingspan sal beslis met EJ begin.

Reynolds het bietjie meer lyf en Laumape sal beslis in Elton se kanaal wil hardloop soos teen Bosch. Met Reynolds daar sal hulle dalk twee keer dink.

Ross/Boeboes/Shaun het almal skrummie gespeel soos dit nodig was, kannie onthou of ek Elton dit al gesien doen het nie en dit het baie gehelp met vinnige bal.

Vir my hang dit baie af wat Jantjies se "attitude" is hierdie week na laasweek se stories. Is hy bietjie suur nog oor hy gedrop was, en oor die bakleiery? In so geval, laat hom van die bank af speel. Maar as hy brand om op te maak en weer lus is vir rugby speel dan sou ek hom dalk begin.

Ek vertrou maar Swys sal die regte besluit neem.

I would play Elton at 10, 

This is a big game, we must choose our strongest team. We dont have the exact details of what happened behind the scenes, but we've reached 3 finals with Elton. He is a bit hot and cold, but dropping the guy completely doesn't make sense either.

I think we would've seen a lot more of EJ at 12 and not Vorster, that combo worked fantastically against the Chiefs.

Perhaps. But now that Vorster is back and in good form I wouldn't move Jantjies to 12 again. Rather take him off to give Reynolds more game time in the 2nd half

As die Leeus hou by wat hulle nou al vir jare se sal hulle nie vir Reynolds drop nadat hy n goeie wedstryd gehad het nie, nee wat ek dink Jantjies maak die res negatief, ook maak hy die refs de mur in
