SANZAAR, the southern hemisphere's rugby governing body, is reportedly considering reverting back to a 14-team Super Rugby competition and doing away with the tournament's conference system from 2021. 

According to a Sydney Morning Herald report, the Sunwolves are the team in the firing line as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina battle to reach consensus about a tournament format which suits all unions. 

The Sunwolves are entering their fourth season of Super Rugby. They have won just six matches in their history, finishing the 2018 competition bottom of the overall table.

That leaves the Tokyo-based franchise at risk of being axed from Super Rugby unless another South African team follows in the footsteps of the Cheetahs and Kings, who were axed from the tournament to join the PRO14.

A 14-team Super Rugby competition would potentially allow for a round-robin competition structure, as opposed to the controversial conference system which is currently being used.

Under the conference system teams can go through the entire season without facing certain opposition.

Argentina's Jaguares joined Super Rugby along with the Sunwolves in 2016 but unlike the men from Tokyo, they have shown steady improvement and made the playoffs in 2018 after finishing in seventh position on the overall standings.

As a full member of SANZAAR, Argentina are also considered an integral part of the Rugby Championship which means the Jaguares are set to stay in Super Rugby.

Ek dink ek het dit al in die verlede gese, die konferensie stelsel maak nie sin nie en round robin is al wat Super Rugby gaan red in my opinie, as dit nie al klaar te laat is nie. Nog 2 jaar van die konferensie gaan die kompetisie net groter skade berokken

Either the round robin or pool system. But the conference system is laughable.

Die sunwolves en Jags hoort nie daar nie. Die jags het wel beter gedoen hierdie jaar, maar die feit dat hul aan die gatkant van die wereld sit en almal soontoe moet vlieg vir 1 game maak nie sin nie.

Sal interesant wees om die finansiele state te sien, want ek glo nie meer Super Rugby is winsgewend vir enige unie of die lande se rugby rade nie. Stadions is leeg want die unies om op te maak vir die tekort laai die kaartjie pryse wat dit basies n baie duur uitstappie maak vir 4 persone.
Voeg nog by die gemak van jou eie huis en deesdae se groot TV's is ook dalk die rede hoekom al minder mense stadions toe sal gaan om die wedtsryd daar te gaan kyk.

Hier is ook al voorheen genoem dat Super Rugby moet ophou en dat daar na alternatiewe kompetiesies gekyk moet word. Daar moet n nuwe formaat wees wat mense weer sal lus maak om weer na wedsrtyde te kyk in die stadions.

Ek dink 2019 gaan seker die laaste jaar wees wat ek werklik nog gaan ruyby kyk wn my span nog gaan support. My persoonlike gevoel is dat na die wereldbeker gaan soveel ouens oorsee waai dat dit regtig nie meer werd gaan wees om ruyby te kyk nie. Ongelukkig is rugby besig on baie vinnig agteruit te gaan in ons land.

ek self Transvaal . Nou wonder ek hoekom gaan mense dan nous kielik begin belangstel as ons super rugby los ? 

Ek persoonlik sou die Leeus se wedstryde kyk . Maar dit sal my nie meer laat belangstel in die wedstryde van ander spanne nie .

Ek stel gladnie belang in Pro 14 nie. Dink ek het in my lewe 'n totaal van 10min gekyk. Enigste oorsese club rugby wat ek dalk sal kyk is as Gloucester speel, en net omdat dit n halwe leeu span is.

Wat ek dink hulle moet doen is sny die jags en wolves uit super rugby uit. speel 1 rondte teen almal, top 4 speel semi's en finaal. 2 spanne wat in finaal gespeel het speel weg en tuis games teen finaliste van Top 14 of Premier liga om as club world champ gekroon te word. 

OF om die CC te red speel jy dit vroeer die jaar. Slegs top 2 spanne speel verkorte super rugby teen top 2 van NZ en top 2 van AUS. Finaliste speel weer verder teen Noordelike halfrond finaliste.

There are a lot of great ideas, but it seems as if SANZAAR and World Rugby are governed by the principle of "more is better".

Wat van maak super rugby soos die sevens? Al die spanne speel oor n naweek op een veld. Die spanne trek loodjies teen wie hulle speel die dag van die wedstryd vir die volgende rondte of so. Einde van die seisoen of x aantal weke later wen die span met die meeste punte. . . Die wedstryde sal dan nie so intermittend wees soos huidig nie, maar meer gekonsentreerde tyd.

There are a lot of great ideas, but it seems as if SANZAAR and World Rugby are governed by the principle of "more is better".

I agree, it's the quantity instead of quality that's killing it for most spectators. I've been saying for the last 3+ seasons, I really don't want to see 4 or more local derbies a year (2 in super rugby and 2 in CC), excluding finals and supersport series
