Is glo alreeds by die Leeus

Nohamba joined the Lions at training for the first time on Tuesday. He will compete with Morne van den Berg for a starting place, while Andre Warner is also on the Lions’ books. - Citizen

I like Nohamba. I think he has good potential and a decent kicking option. But is Morne is our 9 why are we signing another ambitious 9? It will end in tears for one of them. Also what does this say to Nico Steyn?

Our contracting department confuse me.

We signed Ginter Smuts and he can't even get into our Currie Cup team (which can't win a game). Now we sign a 22 year old scrumhalf with bok ambitions. Total of 5 scrumhalves.... (Vd Berg, Warner, Steyn, Smuts and Nohomba). How much of our capped salary budget is tied up in 5 scrumhalves while we can't keep our few stars.

In my opinion (I am no expert), we should only sign players that go straight into the starting line up. We sign them because they are far better than anything we have. Depth should be made up of up and coming juniors and the best of the club/varsity Cup squads.

The only exception being once in a while signing a Jannie DuP and WA type that is not going to play a lot but they have tons of bok caps and can pass on their experience before they retire.

you are leaving out the current starter in the Currie Cup, Claasens, so Nohamba is scrummie number 6. It's crazy

This is what we have been doing this year, without any success.

Apparently the Sharks announcement the signing of Vincent Tshituka on their Twitter account and then deleted it very quickly. I hope this is not true.

Does anyone know how bad the financial situation is at the Lions?

Looking in from the outside it looks quite bad - all URC teams are making several signings but the Lions have only signed a freebie from the Sharks.

I get that the Bulls and the Sharks are not following the salary cap rules but when the Stormers are announcing several signings and they are meant to be bankrupt it makes me really worry.

I agree, there must be more to the Lions rot than we realize. People are joining all the unions except ours and we can't keep our current players on top of that.

Someone needs to explain to me how the Sharks and Bulls can make all these high profile signings when there is supposed to be a salary cap in place. Didn't Saracens get kicked out of the premiership for bypassing the cap?

[QUOTE = PaBz0r] Buy to make sure the other SA teams do worse than you. The guys build depth and here we sit with varsity cup players who have to play two games a week.

We're fighting a losing battle, Carlu is next to blow. It's 4 starters just out of our team, we're back at building every year .. our short bucks and lots of it.
[/ QUOTE]

This is a huge issue. If the Sharks, Bulls and Stormers go into the Champions Cup they will get massive cash injections. They will then be able to put some real distance between themselves and us. We simply will not have enough money to get a squad capable of finishing ahead of them and qualifying for the Champions Cup. It will create a cycle of the Lions being a tier 2 team.

This is why European leagues have strictly enforced salary caps or rules to prevent poaching of each sides best players. It limits the advantage Champions Cup teams get and keeps the league somewhat fair and interesting.

Money may even it out for them, but unfortunately the Lions have a lot to compete with. We are not situated at the coast, our stadium is not in a great place, we are not winning, there are a lot of questions around management and coaching.. where will you go? far far away...
